The Missing (and much needed) Confluence App in your migration journey

As we all know, Atlassian will be sunsetting on-prem Data Center (DC) products by 2029. With this, all on-prem customers are migrating their content to Atlassian Cloud Apps. Over the years, these Cloud Apps have become very distinct than on-prem Data Center product line which is both exciting and frustrating!

Take an example of Confluence Cloud Page editor: Current Confluence page editor (which is also available in DC) is being deprecated as legacy editor in Cloud edition. Starting early 2026, this editor will be replaced with new Confluence Cloud editor called Fabric Editor.

This new way of editing the page is also breaking few things along the way:

  • Many out of box macros that were available in DC are no longer available / supported in new Cloud editor.
  • Ability to write user macros is already not available in Confluence Cloud, it means unless you have equivalent Forge App; you lost this functionality.
  • HTML macros are not available in Confluence Cloud
  • Connect Apps are going away and all vendors are re-writing their apps to run on Forge development platform. As existing apps are getting facelift as part a new Forge App, some of the functionality / features provided earlier in DC or even Cloud, is no longer guaranteed to work in new Cloud Editor!

As a result of all this, although your content is migrated in one piece, it’s not going to be rendered correctly! Many pages will be throwing errors and give headache to users, page authors, Space Admins and of course poor Confluence Admins!

Many of these errors need to be fixed manually but that’s also not going to be easy, as you can’t see the content within these macros due to errors! There is no Page Source editor to rescue either!!

Having gone through these frustations first hand, we decided to something about it. This is where this new Forge COMMAA App (COnfluence Missing Migration Assistant App) comes into picture!

It’s objective is to provide help to individual users, Space Admins and Confluence Admins to fix errors after moving to Cloud and also understand the Confluence Cloud better way!

What it does

Our objective of Codegeist 2025 - MVP is:

  • It will provide Confluence Admins to mange the list of macros that are no longer supported.
  • Also when Confluence Page is rendered in browser, it provides visual guide to users highlighting the macros that errors out.
  • It will give users opportunity to fix this errors in Page Source Editor with all errored macros highlighted. It will provide a way to fix the given macro right there! In case of complex nested body macros (NBM) it will provide detail guidance on how to remove errors and display content successfully!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're counting on the blessings of Confluence Admins and Confluence Users who don't have to go through same frustrations, headaches that we have to go as we migrated to Cloud very recently!

What we learned

Your first time experience can change some one else's first time interaction!

What's next for COMMAA - COnfluence Missing Migration Assistant App

  • In future versions of the App, Confluence Admins will have a way to get more insights into Confluence Hygiene such as:
  • List of pages with having versions more than certain number (say 100)
  • Insights into interaction through REST APIs, activities around service accounts.
  • Ability to Confluence Admins to warn users against use of specific macros if given 3rd Party App is being removed from Confluence in future! Admins can provide suggestions on what are the alternatives and nudge users to start using new functionality instead!
