Inspiration
We have long been confused and frustrated by the design of canvas. There are better ways to organise all of the functions that a student will need, by prioritising features such as calendars and due dates, as well as organising the classes together, we want to help streamline student productivity by providing a better platform that is more minimalistic.
What it does
This website keeps track of all of the courses and homework for a student, by providing a simplistic navigation for users.
How we built it
We built this web app through our VSCode and implemented React.JS to the project. We made sure to track our progress using Github commands, and added Tailwind CSS to style the app. We attempted to use Firebase Authentication for email setup, but we ran out of time to implement it.
Challenges we ran into
During the pre-hackathon planning period, we had 4 hackers who were passionate about this project and wanted to make change in the current e-education landscape. In the first day of the hackathon, we had received news from the both of them, first at the beginning of the hackathon, and second towards nighttime, that there will only be 2 out of the 4 showing up. Other than this, we had technical difficulties, which felt fulfilling to learn about and solve as we carve our own path to the solution.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were both able to learn and further understand components of React and Tailwind. Jason got to further learn how to use Github more efficiently and gained comfortability using it so much so that he doesn't feel he will need to refer to a cheat sheet anymore. Claudia got to dive into the underworking of react and understand it with Tailwind, creating a UI that focuses on ease of use. Overall, we both had a good time. This experience was Jason's first time working with front end development of a website, as well as his first time attending a hackathon! The competitive environment really allowed us to learn how to collaborate, and we were able to learn so much more than we knew before!
What we learned
We both learned about the open source resources that tailwind provides for UI development. Just as they say, "there is no need to reinvent the wheel." We grew our understanding in React and understanding the structure of the syntax and how files interact with one another. To add on, we learned much more useful file organization and how to build websites more efficiently by creating "component" folders.
What's next for Comm
We are looking to continue with the project together and expand our knowledge in front-end development. Jason is interested in cyber-security and would like to implement what he has learned to further help protect our website. Claudia would like to add more options and cleaner/smoother UI to add on to user experience and further develop site to have more readily available API's that can help with functionality. We will finish this out in the months coming and use it as an opportunity to not only learn, but expand our resumes and professional careers. We also hope to provide a vision of how canvas could be much better implemented, and use this as an experience to learn about UI design.
