Inspiration

ComeUnity started with a simple question: Why is it so hard to find help when people are willing to give it?

Every day, people struggle to find blood donors during emergencies, surplus food goes to waste while others go hungry, volunteers have difficulty finding opportunities to help, and individuals with disabilities face barriers when accessing essential services. We realized that the problem wasn't a lack of people willing to help it was the lack of a unified platform that could connect them.

That's why we built ComeUnity because we believe that when communities unite, even small acts of kindness can create a big impact.

What it does

ComeUnity is a platform that helps people find and offer support within their communities. Users can donate food, register as blood donors, discover volunteer opportunities, and access emergency assistance resources. The platform also includes accessibility features to make it easier for everyone to use. We integrated an AI assistant powered by Groq to provide users with quick and helpful responses. The assistant is trained using curated information about ComeUnity's features and services, allowing it to answer questions related to the platform and guide users effectively. Our goal is simple: make help easier to find and easier to give.

How we built it

We built ComeUnity using React, Node.js, Express, and MongoDB. JWT was used for authentication, and the project was deployed using Vercel and Render. We developed the platform feature by feature, gradually combining all the modules into a single, unified experience.

Challenges we ran into

Building a platform with multiple services wasn't easy. We faced challenges with deployment, connecting the frontend and backend, managing authentication, and debugging API and database issues. Ensuring that everything worked together smoothly while keeping the platform accessible was one of our biggest challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a complete full-stack application that focuses on solving real problems. Bringing food donation, blood donation, volunteering, and accessibility features together in one platform was a huge achievement for us. More importantly, we're proud that ComeUnity has the potential to make a positive difference in people's lives.

What we learned

This project taught us a lot about full-stack development, deployment, and accessibility. It also taught us the importance of building technology with purpose. We learned that the best projects aren't always the most complex they're the ones that genuinely help people.

What's next for ComeUnity

ComeUnity is just getting started. In the future, we'd like to add disaster management tools, mobile applications, and additional accessibility features. Our vision is to grow ComeUnity into a platform that communities everywhere can use to connect, collaborate, and support one another.
