Inspiration
We were inspired by the stories and themes present in super hero myths and legends. We wanted to provide instantly recognizable hero figures that people can trust and depend on when confidence in public authority is dangerously low. From ancient warriors like Beowulf to modern legends like Spider-man, heroes have played a big role in displaying to true power of the indomitable human spirit in the face of the unspeakable. It is time to make those heroes real by providing the frame work to will them into existence.
What it does
CometCore provides an organizational structure for a community led vigilant group with the goal of creating a supplement to the traditional criminal justice system. CometCore aims to be an alternative to the police that people can call when faced with none violet emergencies, taking the weigh off the police force.
CometCore also provides a friendly and approachable image that people feel comfortable bringing their problem to. When you see a Cometeer(A CometCore Vigialant), you should see a daring do-gooder ready to help as they are trained to do. Good public perception is important when public confidence in police is at a historic low point. https://counciloncj.org/public-perceptions-of-the-police/
How we built it
By using craft supplies like fabric sheets, sewing mesh, construction paper and felt pipe cleaner, we designed the uniforms an average Cometeer would wear, color coded to denote their area of expertise.
Figma was used to make the mock ups for the CometCore app, firealpaca and Camtasia Studio were used to edit videos.
Lastly, we created a foam covering to represent a prototype emergency response vehicle the Cometeers would pilot remotely as needed. A VR headset could be used to pilot the vehicle when maximum precision is required.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble acquiring the proper material we needed to craft the uniforms. Getting the material, machinery and funding to create uniforms that fully encompass our vision isn't feasible within such a short time frame.
Additionally, We had hardware limitations as the RasberryPi and Arduino boards that were available to us were not the latest model and lacked functionality to send wifi signals or communicate with a computer remotely. Due to this, we could not build an AR environment that could control the prototype vehicle remotely.
Finally, as challenges kept arising, we started doubting the legitimacy of our project fearing we had taken on a task too momentous to create.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the uniforms we were able to and the uniqueness of our project. The ability to bring something as fantastical as super heroes into reality is no easy task and we are happy to bring the world proof that is possible.
What we learned
We learned the importance of community and exactly how powerful it is to have a network of people to support us. We pushed ourselves beyond our comfort zones, tried new things like costume design, understanding government legislation and how to incorporate hardware in a primarily software focused project.
What's next for CometCore: Make Belief Made Real
We want to procure official government guidance and proper oversight from FEMA, The US Department Of Homeland Security and The Judicial Branch to consult us in public safety. We would also like to find a consistent avenue to fund future expansion and the construction of official stations for training exercises.
