Inspiration

As a busy college student who rarely has time to eat meals that are actually of nutritional value, I noticed that the lack of variety in my diet was starting to take a toll on me. I always went grocery shopping for the basics--veggies, fruits, grains, etc--but I was getting tired of eating baked sweet potatoes every other day. I searched everywhere for a tool that takes into account the ingredients you have on hand and then combines them into conveniently grouped meal-prep lunchboxes. Inspired by the convenience of bento boxes from Japan, Combento was born.

What it does

Combento is an app that combines ingredients and presents you with hundreds of bento boxes. Add your ingredients by food group ( veggies, fruits, protein, grains, personal recipes, and desserts), create bento box templates (lunchboxes split up into a maximum of four sections), and let Combento generate tons of combinations for you! Save your favorite combinations for an even easier meal prep experience.

How I built it

Marvel App, a wireframing tool, was used to create the demo app. The frontend's UI and colors were inspired by the earthy, balanced vibes that are often found in Japan. Google Cloud Platform's App Engine combined with Mongo DB Atlas and Compass would provide the backend for the app, storing user accounts and ingredients.

Challenges I ran into

I had trouble turning my marvel demo into a real app.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am very pleased with the way that the app looks!

What I learned

I learned more about UI/UX than I ever had before as a Computer Science major.

What's next for Combento

A real app!
