Inspiration
Traveling is exciting, but it can also be confusing, especially in unfamiliar places. Most apps just show maps or static info. We wanted something better: a guide that understands where you are, speaks your language, and shows you what’s around in a personal way. That’s why we created Columbus AI, a smart, voice-based tour guide that makes exploring any city simple, personal, and engaging.
What it does
Columbus AI recognizes nearby landmarks using AI and GPS, then speaks to you in your language, offering personalized travel tips and the best routes to explore.
How we built it
AI Vision + GPS We used CLIP to interpret visual inputs (conceptually, like recognizing landmarks) and matched this with live GPS coordinates to identify the user's location and surroundings.
Landmark Recognition & Routing Based on the current position, Columbus AI fetches nearby points of interest and calculates optimal walking routes, factoring in user preferences (e.g., art, food, history).
Multilingual Voice Assistant Using text-to-speech and translation APIs, Columbus AI speaks directly to users in their preferred language, providing context, history, and suggestions just like a real tour guide.
User Personalization We implemented a simple profile system to adjust recommendations based on interests, travel pace, and accessibility needs.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing real-time accuracy and speed. Making voice responses sound natural in many languages. Providing the right info at the right time. Integrating AI vision without relying on the phone camera.
Our Accomplishment
We built a seamless, multilingual AI tour guide that combines smart landmark recognition with personalized, real-time spoken recommendations, making travel more natural and enjoyable for everyone.
What we learned
Building Columbus AI taught us a lot about: Multimodal AI integration. Using models like CLIP to connect visual data with meaningful location based insights. Natural language processing and speech synthesis, to create engaging, multilingual conversations. Personalization algorithms, to tailor routes and recommendations based on user preferences. Real-time systems, managing live location data and generating relevant responses instantly.
What's next for Columbus AI
We plan to expand language support, enhance personalization with user behavior learning, and integrate with AR glasses and smart city platforms, making Columbus AI even more immersive and accessible worldwide.
