Inspiration
I recently got into retro pixel art after finding myself in a digital art videos spiral on YouTube. I love the simplicity of the building blocks of pixel art coupled with the simple tips and tricks a person can use to make their pixel art stand out. And so it felt only natural I create a game that allowed for others to discover this same love, without the pressures of creating from scratch.
What it does
Everyday, a new colouring challenge is posted; sometimes with a constraint sometimes it's a free for all. Redditors can then express themselves through colour and share their colour creations. A leaderboard can be used to track our dedicated Reddit artists. But no pressure. It's all about the journey!
How I built it
I built it using the Devout React template. Which besides offering a scaffold on who to build,an also includes an example of how Devout apps work. The template consisted of a React app for the client and Hono for the api.
Challenges I ran into
I had not built with Devout before so there was a a slight learning curve. This was however quickly surmounted by leveraging the Devout AI Helper. The fact that testing needed to be done on a subreddit meant longer cycle times between implementation and manual review of any changes. This slowed things a just a tad bit.
What I learned
How to build on top of Reddit. And a little bit about Hono
What's next for Colour Me Pixeled
Add new features such as daily streaks, incorporating upvotes into the leaderboard calculations and introducing a way for pixel artists to submit their own challenges(perhaps as a reward for topping the leaderboard) I basically plan to keep building, keep spreading the word, and keep growing the community
