Our inspiration

Many children, along with adults, are confused by the ongoing pandemic. With a wealth of false information circulating via social media it is no surprise that members of the public are afraid and misinformed. It is important for these people to understand, in simple terms, what a pandemic is, why coronavirus is not just a common flu, why scientific activities are so important in this situation and how everybody can help to fight against the virus.

Our Solution

An informative and interactive colouring book! Children and parents can learn about COVID-19 in an engaging way. The book will tell the story of the virus and inform children about; Why we all have to stay at home; the important work carried out by healthcare workers and scientists; and how to keep ourselves safe!

This will help parents explain to their children about what is going on in a non-confusing way. The book will be available as a printable online resource and a paperback version. Our book will help the fight against false information, keeping us all healthy and happy together.

The Story

Pike: The Virus With Spikes!

Our story is about two siblings and how the virus is affecting their lives and the lives of their family members. In the story the mother is a Doctor and the father is a scientist, both very important roles in the pandemic situation! The book will help the reader to understand this.

Part of our story is also told from the point of view of Pike, a very spiky virus. Pike wants to infect the world but we can work together to stop him!

So Far...

Over the course of the Hackathon, we have developed a complete story to tell! Our group has already designed the main characters of our story (illustrations included in the image gallery). Games and puzzles to be included in the final product, are in current development.

Next Steps...

To continue our project and produce our book, we will require the efforts of a professional illustrator to complete our images. The project should also have input from a paediatric psychologist, to make sure our product has a positive impact to the children and their families.

We predict that a completed product will be available to consumers within a few weeks. This highlights that our solution is viable within a very short timescale, but has the potential for a large impact on the wellbeing of readers. Furthermore with the online availability of the product and low cost of production and to readers, Pike: The Virus With Spikes will be able to reach a huge audience!
