Inspiration
We were talking in class with a foreign college friend who shared with us his experience with colorblindness. We told us that since he moved out of his house to continue his studies, he was having a hard time deciding what to wear. In his home, he could just ask his friends or family about his outfits, but since he's living alone now, he has no one to confirm his outfits. After doing research we found out that about 8% of males and 0.5% of women worldwide (about 350 million people) have color vision deficiency.
What it does
The app focuses on helping people with any color vision deficiency choose a matching outfit out of their wardrobe. The app also serves as a virtual closet, since you can save your individual clothes and see them organized.
How we built it
We an iOS app that uses the front facing camera to process the images. We then analyze and process these images to find the colors of different clothes. We had to develop an algorithm that can decide when clothes are matching or not based on some features we found useful.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble deciding the heuristics about matching clothes, so we had to talk with people who were familiar with the field. We also had to talk with color blind people to better understand their perspective and process for choosing clothes.
What we learned
During this project we learned a lot about both colorblindness, about the rules to create a matching outfit, and how images process colors and their pixel values.
What's next for ColorMe
We look forward to add more options to match the outfits like belts, caps, glasses, etc. We also look forward to add features oriented towards women's clothes. We could also implement WebScraping to find matching clothes inside the app and sell clothes through the app.
