ColorGenie - AI-Powered Mood-Based Color Palette Generator
"Color your vision with AI – Mood-based palettes for every purpose."
Inspiration
Designers often struggle to choose the perfect color palette that matches the mood or theme of their app, website, or brand. This process can be time-consuming and inconsistent. We wanted to simplify this by allowing AI to assist in generating beautiful, mood-aligned color schemes instantly. Thus, ColorGenie was created to take in a mood or app type and output a matching palette—saving time and boosting creativity.
What it does
- ColorGenie is an Adobe add-on powered by Python and the Gemini API.
- It takes in a mood or app category as input.
- Optionally, the user can input their own color palette as a guide.
- The AI then generates a relevant 5-color palette based on the mood/theme.
- Ideal for use in app/web design, branding, and UI/UX development.
How we built it
- Python backend using Flask
- Gemini API for natural language processing and color generation
- Mood/theme inputs processed and converted into 5-color palettes
- Optional user color input to refine AI suggestions
- Designed to function as an Adobe extension and future-ready for Figma/Webflow
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring generated palettes were both aesthetic and usable
- Matching vague or abstract moods (e.g., "playful", "vintage") with colors
- Aligning AI logic with design principles and color psychology
- Balancing AI automation with user creativity and control
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Fully functional AI-powered color palette generator
- Successfully integrated AI with optional user customization
- Generated accurate, mood-relevant palettes for specific app use-cases (e.g., food delivery)
- Built an extension-ready prototype suitable for real-world design workflows
What we learned
- Effective prompt engineering with Gemini for creative results
- Insights into color theory, branding, and emotion mapping
- Combining automation with manual input in a helpful UX
- Real-world considerations for designers and front-end teams
What's next for ColorGenie
- Add accessibility checks (contrast ratio, color blindness-safe palettes)
- Export options (CSS, SCSS, Adobe Swatch, HEX/ RGB list)
- Figma and Webflow integration
- Introduce theme inspirations (e.g., minimal, retro, bold, dark mode)
- Build a mini community gallery for sharing and remixing palettes
