Inspiration

As a group, our main goal for this Hackathon was to have fun and learn as much as possible from the people around us, all while putting our time to good use by making a positive impact in the community around us. While brainstorming problems, we thought heavily about sensory deprivation issues and how that affects inclusivity, especially in areas such as a classroom. Students spend so much of their days on computers (especially at Georgia TECH!), and so we thought the perfect combination to solve this problem was to create a simple chrome extension for color-blind people.

What it does

Our extension allows users to pick between three common types of colorblindness (the extension could be upgraded in the future to allow for more types). They simply tap a button to turn on the filter which applies a hue rotation to the website and aids in vision.

How we built it

After brainstorming, we did some research on how to create our own chrome extension and then got to programming with HTML and CSS. After we had a skeleton set up, Javascript aided us with the dynamic features of the extension. This required continuous testing and fidgeting with the values of hue rotation in order to properly aid the various color deficincies faced by color blind individuals.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was to mimic the proper hue rotation values that would actually do the best job in helping each kind of color blindness.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are all really proud of the fact that we have a finished product, especially one that is something that we can actually post out into the real world to help our community. Also, we find it really cool that we made a chrome extension, which is something we use everyday but something that none of us have made before.

What we learned

Development from scratch is difficult. There is so much that goes into it, from the idea formulation to the research, all the way to programming from a blank page and collaborating with your teammates on github.

What's next for Colorblind Extension

We could advance this extension to add more types of color blindness to help, and we could also keep making our hue rotations more precise.
