Inspiration

The inspiration for "CollegeStep" came from observing the challenges college students face in balancing their academic responsibilities, social lives, and participation in sports. I recognized a gap in existing applications and websites, which tend to focus on just one aspect of college life, leaving students to juggle multiple platforms and solutions. I was recently accepted to college (early decision, this December) and I spent tons of time looking through hundreds of blogs to understand what each university would be like. After acceptance, I realised that I did not want to spend hours (again) trying to find out more about sports, social life, academics, classes, et cetera at the university. This realisation sparked the idea to create an all-encompassing app powered by AI to assist students holistically, ensuring they have the support and resources needed to thrive in every aspect of their college experience.

What it does

CollegeStep is a simple application built on PartyRock that, based on a class you're struggling with, provides summarized help and notes and general headlines that should be covered for a test. Based on the university you're in, the app also provides details on social life, jobs you can take up, mental health resources, sporting events and teams, and so on. Essentially, CollegeStep tries to give you summarized information you need on college or on a particular class. The app can also generate a timetable for you.

How I built it

Built on PartyRock, a generative AI platform, CollegeStep was developed using straightforward instructions that leverage the platform's powerful AI capabilities. Initially, I defined the core functionalities needed for academic support, social networking, and sports, aligning with my vision to create a holistic college assistance app. Using PartyRock's intuitive interface, I then crafted AI models tailored to these functionalities.

PartyRock's user-friendly scripting language enabled me to integrate these AI models seamlessly, automating the generation of study guides, social event suggestions, and athletic opportunities.

In essence, building CollegeStep on PartyRock simplified the complex process of developing an AI-powered app. It allowed me to focus on delivering value to college students by harnessing generative AI's potential.

Challenges I ran into

First, I was a bit confused on how to format the app page. I figured this out quickly. Initially, I also was not selecting the best prompts for the Claude LLM.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

A standout accomplishment is the AI integration in CollegeStep, offering personalized student experiences. Mastering PartyRock's AI for tailored academic, social, and athletic recommendations reflects my deep understanding of college dynamics, showcasing my ability to innovate and genuinely impact students' lives through technology.

What I learned

In developing CollegeStep, I learned a lot more about college and the power of Generative AI. Generative AI is easily one of the best innovations in a while.

What's next for CollegeStep by Shikhar Sehgal

The next steps for CollegeStep involve expanding its features and reach. First, I plan to incorporate more advanced AI algorithms to enhance personalization, making recommendations even more tailored to individual users' needs and preferences. Additionally, I aim to broaden the app's scope by integrating career advising and mental health resources, addressing the comprehensive needs of college students. To increase accessibility, developing versions for additional platforms and languages is also on the horizon. Collaborating with universities and educational institutions will help tailor the content more closely to specific academic programs and cultures. Finally, continuous feedback loops will be established to ensure the app evolves in response to user needs, keeping CollegeStep at the forefront of educational technology innovations.
