Inspiration

As a high school student, I saw many peers struggle with the confusing and overwhelming college application process. There was no easy way to get personalized guidance, scholarship information, and clear next steps all in one place. I wanted to create an app that acts like a personal college advisor—free and accessible to every student.

What I Learned

Through this project, I deepened my skills in both frontend and backend development by using React.js and Flask. I also learned how to design user-friendly interfaces and manage user data securely. Beyond technical skills, I gained experience in project planning, problem-solving, and iterative testing.

How I Built It

I built Collegely as a web app using React for the frontend to create a responsive, intuitive user experience, and Flask for the backend to handle data processing and user requests. I integrated college and scholarship data to provide personalized recommendations. I also created a progress tracker to help students stay organized throughout their college journey.

Challenges Faced

One major challenge was designing an accurate recommendation system that balanced multiple student inputs like GPA, interests, and financial needs. Optimizing performance and ensuring a smooth, bug-free experience across devices required extensive testing and refinement. Managing data privacy while giving users meaningful feedback was another key hurdle.

Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of

I successfully built a full-stack web app combining React and Flask. I developed a personalized recommendation algorithm for colleges and scholarships. I created a clean, intuitive user interface that simplifies a complex process. Additionally, I received positive feedback from peers who found the app helpful during their college search.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, I learned the importance of iterative design and user feedback in building effective apps. I gained insight into balancing technical complexity with user-friendly interfaces. I also developed strategies for managing data privacy and security in educational apps. Lastly, I improved my collaboration and project management skills during the development process.

What's Next for Collegely

In the future, I plan to add mobile app versions for iOS and Android to reach more users. I want to incorporate AI-driven personalized essay feedback and college readiness quizzes. I hope to partner with schools and counselors to expand the app’s reach and impact. Finally, I aim to enhance scholarship data integration to offer even more tailored opportunities for students.
