Inspiration
As a parent, I watched friends stress over unplanned college costs—no simple tool existed to tie together savings calculations, 529 plan comparisons, and tax benefits. I wanted to build something that made long-term education planning accessible, not overwhelming, for average families.
What it does
CollegeFund Planner helps parents calculate monthly savings goals (accounting for 5% annual tuition inflation: $cost = current × (1.05)^years), compare 529 plans by state, analyze state tax savings, get age-based investment allocations, and track progress toward savings targets—all with intuitive, engaging visuals.
How we built it
I started with core financial logic (inflation, investment return calculations) in JavaScript, then built a React frontend with Tailwind CSS for responsive design. GSAP handled advanced animations (parallax, floating elements, chart transitions), while Chart.js visualized tax benefits and portfolio breakdowns. LocalStorage stored session inputs for seamless UX, and Intersection Observer optimized animation performance.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing complex animations (60fps performance) with accessibility (reduced motion support) was tough—overlays and parallax effects often caused lag on mobile. Also, aligning 529 plan data across states required rigorous validation to ensure accurate recommendations for diverse users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a tool that’s both visually immersive (glassmorphism, particle systems, dynamic gradients) and mathematically precise. We prioritized accessibility without sacrificing design, and the real-time calculation engine updates savings goals instantly as users adjust inputs—no clunky reloads.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of financial modeling for consumer tools and learned to optimize animations for cross-device performance. Most importantly, I realized how critical it is to translate complex tax/investment rules into simple, actionable insights for non-expert users.
What's next for this project
We plan to add multi-child support as a premium feature, integrate federal tax benefit updates, and refine 529 plan recommendations with real-time state policy changes. A mobile-optimized flow and simplified PDF reports for financial advisors are also in the works.
