Inspiration

College life is overwhelming. Students constantly juggle assignments, tests, deadlines, lack of sleep, and stress — often without any structured support. Most tools are either too serious or disconnected from real student behavior. We were inspired to build something that understands students emotionally, helps them practically, and feels approachable rather than intimidating. That’s where College Survival AI was born.

What it does

College Survival AI is a smart student assistant that helps students manage stress, deadlines, and academic tasks in a simple and engaging way.

It calculates a student’s “Survival Probability” based on sleep, workload, and habits, tracks assignments and tests with smart reminders, and provides AI-powered academic help through a friendly “AI Bestie” that guides, supports, and motivates students daily.

How we built it

We built College Survival AI as a multi-page web application using:

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend

A single global stylesheet for consistent design

Separate JavaScript files for calculator logic, tasks, reminders, and chat

Node.js backend to securely connect with the Gemini API

LocalStorage to store tasks and deadlines without requiring login

The Gemini-powered AI analyzes student inputs, deadlines, and stress levels to provide personalized academic guidance and daily action plans.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was designing AI behavior that felt supportive instead of overwhelming. We had to carefully balance humor, urgency, and emotional tone so the AI responded appropriately to student stress levels and deadlines.

Another challenge was managing reminders and task logic without user accounts, which required efficient local data handling and date comparisons.

Building a complete multi-page application with clean structure and UX

Designing a tool that students can genuinely imagine using daily

What we learned

We learned that AI becomes far more powerful when it is context-aware and empathetic, not just informative. We also gained hands-on experience with frontend architecture, AI integration, user-centered design, and building real solutions for real problems faced by students.
