Inspiration
As students at Brown looking for a place to stay in Providence this summer, we realized that there is no streamlined way to connect students with subletting opportunities. Usually, people post their subletting listings on Instagram, Sidechat, and even class group chats. We want to change this, and make subletting easier for everyone.
What it does
Our goal was to create one website where students with leases could post their listings, and students looking for a place could browse through and choose one that best suits them based on distance, dates available, and price.
How we built it
Right now, we have a comprehensive Figma design that we plan to implement over the next few weeks so that it's live by the time students are seeking summer housing.
Challenges we ran into
We had very little experience with Figma and web development in general. We didn't have time to translate our Figma design into code, but we look forward to doing so in the coming days and weeks and we can't wait for our website to go live. We anticipate that sorting will be a challenge, as we want users to be able to choose parameters that are important to them while browsing through listings. We also need to create a database to hold the listings and to be able to retrieve them efficiently.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we learned how to use Figma in such limited time, and tried something new! We are new to computer science, and this project has really inspired us to keep working at it!
What we learned
We learned Figma, how to approach a large-scale project, how to collaborate effectively, and how to optimize our design with the user in mind.
What's next for College Hill Sublets
We are going to translate this design into code, and then continue to refine it until we are ready to go live in a few weeks! We plan to advertise our website to Brown and RISD students and we can't wait to see the impact that it has on College Hill!
