Inspiration
The inspiration behind Pathfinder Pro is deeply personal. As students currently navigating the college application maze, we know firsthand how overwhelming and stressful it gets — endless lists of colleges, 20+ entrance exams (JEE, NEET, CUET, BITSAT, SAT...), confusing eligibility criteria, and no clear answer to the question every student is really asking: "Do I even have a shot here?"
No counsellor. No roadmap. Just anxiety, spreadsheets, and late-night Google searches. We built the tool we wished we had — a single dashboard that turns chaos into clarity.
What it does
Pathfinder Pro takes a student's complete academic profile — their grades, exam scores (JEE Main percentile, NEET score, SAT, etc.), intended major, dream institutions, and even their resume — and instantly generates:
🎯 Personalized College Matches — Reach, target, and safety colleges with match scores
📊 Gap Analysis — Exactly what's missing for their dream institutions
💼 Career Path Recommendations — Aligned with their major and profile strength
📅 6-Month Action Roadmap — Month-by-month tasks with priority levels
🤖 AI Chat Assistant — Answers any college-related question instantly
✅ Application Checklist — Track progress with interactive checkmarks
It turns a stressful, guesswork-heavy process into a clear, personalised action plan — all in one beautiful dashboard.
How we built it
We built Pathfinder Pro using HTML5, CSS3 (with CSS Grid, Flexbox, and custom properties for theming), and vanilla JavaScript — no frameworks, just clean, performant code.
Frontend Features:
Fully responsive design that works on phones, tablets, and desktops
Drag-and-drop file upload interface
Dynamic form generation for 20+ entrance exams
Animated accordions, progress bars, and smooth transitions
Interactive checklist with visual feedback
The Intelligence:
The recommendation engine is powered by an AI API that analyses each student's profile
Generates personalised college matches, career paths, and roadmaps in real time
Contextual tips adapt based on exam scores and academic background
Team Effort: Two-person team — one focused on UI/UX and frontend magic, the other on API integration and data logic.
Challenges we ran into
Challenge How We Solved It AI API Integration Getting the app to send the right profile data, interpret responses accurately, and display meaningful output took significant debugging and iteration Prompt Engineering Making the AI's recommendations relevant (not generic) required 20+ prompt refinements and testing with real student profiles Dynamic Exam Forms Supporting 20+ exams with different score formats (percentile, rank, score out of 720, etc.) meant building a flexible input generator Resume "Analysis" We wanted CV feedback without a backend — created an interactive checklist that feels like real analysis State Management Keeping track of active exams, dream colleges, checklist status, and form data across components was complex with vanilla JS Accomplishments that we're proud of ✅ Fully Functional — For a two-person team, shipping a working AI-powered web app that solves a real problem we personally relate to feels like a genuine achievement
🎨 Premium UI — The dashboard looks and feels like a real SaaS product, not a hackathon project
📱 Mobile Responsive — Works perfectly on phones, which matters because most students research colleges on mobile
🧠 20+ Exam Support — From JEE Main to GMAT, we cover the exams that matter to Indian students
💬 AI Chat Assistant — Answers questions about SOPs, scholarships, exam strategies, and counselling in real time
🏆 Zero Backend Required — The demo version works entirely client-side, making it instantly deployable
More than the code, we're proud that this tool could genuinely reduce stress for students who are in the same position we were.
What we learned
AI API End-to-End — From structuring inputs and handling rate limits to making the output feel useful rather than robotic
Prompt Engineering Matters — A well-crafted prompt is the difference between generic advice and genuinely helpful insights
Build What You Know — Building for a problem you've lived keeps you motivated through the hard parts (like 3 AM debugging sessions)
Ship Fast, Iterate Faster — Shipping something real, even if imperfect, teaches you more than any tutorial
CSS Grid is Powerful — Building that complex sidebar + main panel layout without flexbox wars was a game-changer
Vanilla JS is Enough — You don't need React for everything; clean DOM manipulation works beautifully

Pathfinder Pro Inspiration
Hi! We're high school students too. And honestly? College applications are SCARY.
Last month, I sat at my desk with 15 Chrome tabs open — JEE cutoffs, college rankings, application deadlines, scholarship forms... I had no clue where to even start. My parents were stressed. My friends were stressed. Everyone kept asking "Which college are you aiming for?" but nobody could tell me if I actually had a chance.
That's when it hit me — why isn't there one simple tool that just tells me what to do?
So I built it. Pathfinder Pro is the tool I wished existed when I was crying over my JEE score at 2 AM.
What It Does (No Jargon, Promise) Think of Pathfinder Pro as that one super-smart senior friend who's already been through the college process and just tells you straight up:
What You Get What That Actually Means 🎯 College Matches "With your 92% and JEE score, here are 5 colleges where you actually have a shot" ⭐ Gap Analysis "You want IIT? Here's EXACTLY what you're missing — no sugarcoating" 📅 Roadmap "Don't panic. This month do this. Next month do that. You've got time." 💬 Chat Assistant "Ask me anything — 'How to write an essay?' 'What's a good NEET score?' — I'll answer" ✅ Checklist Like a grocery list but for college apps. Check things off as you do them No confusion. No guesswork. Just a clear path forward.
How We Built It (The Real Story)
Two of us. One weekend. Lots of chai ☕
What We Used Why HTML The skeleton — like the walls of a house CSS The paint and decorations — made it look pretty JavaScript The brain — makes buttons work, calculates matches, talks to AI AI API The smart friend — generates personalised advice Real talk: The AI part was HARD. We spent hours trying to make it give useful advice instead of robotic nonsense. At one point, it told a student with 95% to "consider improving grades" 💀 Took us 20 tries to fix that.
We also argued about colors for 45 minutes. (I won. The orange looks great.)
Challenges We Faced (And How We Survived) Challenge What Happened How We Fixed It The AI was dumb Gave generic advice like "study harder" Rewrote the instructions 20+ times until it actually helped Too many exams JEE, NEET, SAT, CUET... all have different score formats Built a system that shows different input boxes for each exam Resume "analysis" We can't actually read PDFs (yet) Made an interactive checklist instead — students can self-evaluate Phone looked ugly Everything broke on small screens Spent 3 hours fixing CSS (worth it — now works on phones) Team disagreements "Blue or orange?" "Orange!" "But blue..." We flipped a coin. Orange won. No regrets.
What We're Proud Of (The Good Stuff)
🏆 It actually works — You can open it right now, enter your scores, and get real college matches
🎨 It looks professional — Not gonna lie, it looks like a real app, not a school project
📱 Works on phones — Because let's be real, that's where students do their research
💬 Chat assistant is useful — Ask it "How do I improve my JEE rank?" and it gives real strategies
🧠 We built it in ONE weekend — Two high schoolers, 48 hours, lots of caffeine
But honestly? The thing I'm most proud of is that this tool would have helped me last year when I was stressed and confused. That makes all the late nights worth it.
What We Learned (School Didn't Teach Us This) Lesson How We Learned It AI is not magic It's just a robot following instructions — garbage in, garbage out Start small, then add Our first version was ugly. We made it pretty later. Ask for help Stack Overflow saved us like 10 times Take breaks When nothing works, walk away. Eat something. Come back fresh. Perfect is the enemy of done Our app isn't perfect. But it works. And that's enough. Also — building something that solves YOUR problem keeps you motivated. When I felt like giving up, I remembered how stressed I was last year. That kept me going.
What's Next (Our Wishlist)
Stuff we want to add soon:
💾 Save your profile — So you don't have to re-enter everything if you close the tab
🏫 More colleges — Right now we have 50+. We want 500+.
📄 Real resume reader — Upload your PDF and we'll actually analyze it
🗣️ Hindi support — Because not everyone is comfortable in English
📱 Real mobile app — Not just a website that works on phones
The BIG dream:
Make Pathfinder Pro the free alternative to expensive college counsellors. Every student deserves guidance — not just the ones who can pay ₹50,000 for it.
Made By Name Aakshi Grade 12th (high school student)
Why I built this
Because I was confused and stressed about college too Fun fact I cried over my first JEE mock test. Now I'm building tools to help others.
A Note From Me
Hey. If you're reading this and you're stressed about college — I get it. I've been there. The late-night Google searches. The comparing yourself to friends. The "what if I don't get in anywhere?" panic. Here's what I learned: You're not alone. And you don't need to figure it all out today. Pathfinder Pro won't solve all your problems. But it will give you a starting point. A clear direction. A little less anxiety. And sometimes, that's enough. Good luck. You've got this. 🧭
