Inspiration

Inspired by the need for efficient student management in colleges, this ERP system provides a centralized platform for course enrollment and user authentication. The goal was to create a modern, responsive web application that solves real-world educational challenges.

What it does

This backend powers a comprehensive college management system that handles user authentication, course management, and student data operations. It provides secure APIs for registration, login, course enrollment, and dashboard data retrieval, enabling students to manage their academic journey through a modern web interface.

How we built it

Built using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js), the backend features: Express.js RESTful APIs for user and course operations MongoDB Atlas for scalable cloud database with schema validation JWT authentication with bcryptjs password hashing for secure sessions CORS configuration for frontend-backend communication Modular architecture with separate routes for authentication and student operations

Challenges we ran into

CORS Configuration: Resolved cross-origin issues between Live Server (port 5500) and Express backend (port 3000) Database Connectivity: Fixed MongoDB Atlas DNS resolution and connection string validation Authentication Flow: Implemented secure JWT verification across protected routes with proper error handling Package Dependencies: Resolved bcrypt native compilation issues by switching to bcryptjs Port Conflicts: Managed EADDRINUSE errors and ensured stable backend operation

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Modern Dashboard Interface: Created responsive UI with navbar, sidebar, and card-based course display using Tailwind CSS Secure Authentication: Implemented JWT-based sessions with proper token verification and expiration Scalable Database Design: Developed MongoDB schemas for users and courses with validation and relationships Error Handling: Built comprehensive error handling for both frontend and backend with user-friendly messages GitHub Integration: Successfully deployed project with proper documentation and version control

What we learned

Full-Stack Development: Mastered end-to-end development from database design to frontend deployment Authentication Security: Learned JWT implementation, bcrypt hashing, and secure session management API Design: Developed RESTful API best practices with proper error handling and validation Database Operations: Gained experience with MongoDB Atlas, schema design, and aggregation queries Frontend-Backend Integration: Mastered CORS configuration and cross-origin request handling Git Workflow: Learned GitHub repository management, .gitignore configuration, and commit history
