Inspiration
Cooking can be time-consuming, and finding recipes you have the ingredients for can be difficult. For these reasons many college students, including us, eat out frequently. Considering the current pandemic, this habit is bad for one's health and budget, so we made a platform that makes finding and sharing recipes easier to encourage more cooking within our community.
What it does
College Cooking allows a user to search for recipes in our database with specialized criteria such as preparation time, difficulty, ingredients, calories, and price level. If a user would like to share a recipe of their own, they may also add their own recipe to our database to be seen by other users.
How we built it
We tackled this project one page at a time, going only for functionality at first and then later revisiting each page to make the site more aesthetic.
Challenges we ran into
Making a website look good is hard, we had to go through a TON of trial and error with our styling decisions to make something that looks decent. We also ran into some trouble navigating our database.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Though it was a journey getting there, we think our website looks clean. And as far as functionality is concerned, we think our 'advanced recipe search' algorithm is pretty cool.
What we learned
This project helped us polish our HTML, CSS, and SQL skills. Figuring out how to search our database with specialized criteria was particularly educational.
What's next for College Cooking
We want to eventually add more social aspects to encourage our community to be more engaged with cooking and our site (friends list, food blog section, etc.).
