Inspiration

College life can feel overwhelming with classes, assignments, events, and social commitments all competing for attention. The idea behind College Companion was to create a scenario-driven app that acts like a personal assistant for students — helping them stay organized, connected, and less stressed. The inspiration came from noticing how fragmented tools like calendars, reminders, and messaging apps are, and wanting to unify them into one student-first experience.

What it does

College Companion brings all essential academic tools into one place:

  • Verify SGPA and CGPA instantly
  • Draft formal letters (leave, bonafide, grievances) and even fun excuses
  • Map out your exam calendar and track attendance
  • Fill Cycle Lab evaluation sheets in seconds
  • Access PYQs (Past Year Question Papers)
  • Stay focused with a Pomodoro timer
  • Generate formal academic emails with ease

How we built it

  • Mobile-first design: Native Android app with a minimalist UI and playful personality
  • Offline-first architecture: Works without internet, ensuring reliability during exams or travel
  • Modular toolkit: Each feature (attendance tracker, grade calculator, letter lab, etc.) is built as a lightweight module
  • Student-focused workflows: Designed for both Indian and international universities, tailored to real academic scenarios

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a minimalist UI that balances simplicity with feature richness
  • Ensuring offline functionality while keeping data accurate and secure
  • Creating templates flexible enough to handle diverse university requirements
  • Building a playful personality into the app without compromising professionalism

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Delivered a no ads, no hidden analytics promise — truly student-first
  • Built a one-stop academic toolkit that replaces scattered spreadsheets and PDFs
  • Designed a modular system that can scale with new features like lab cycles, PYQs, and timers
  • Made the app accessible and useful for both students and mentors

What we learned

  • Students value clarity and offline reliability more than flashy features
  • A playful personality in design can make academic tools feel less stressful
  • Building for universities across regions requires flexible templates and modular workflows
  • The importance of streamlined communication tools like letter labs and mail generators in academic life

What's next for College Companion

  • Expand the feature set with more academic utilities
  • Explore cross-platform support beyond Android
  • Build a community-driven repository of PYQs and templates
  • Partner with universities to integrate official schedules and resources
  • Add AI-assisted suggestions for study planning and productivity
