Inspiration
Two of the team members live in Schenectady and have first hand experience with the operations of the sanitation vehicles from the community point of view.
What it does
Community Portal
- ETA for your collection - see if you have time to take a shower before running outside to put the garbage on the curb.
- Request service - all requests are tagged with a location / latitude & longitude
- Large item pickup - the lift gate truck can be dispatched as needed, instead of roaming the zone, reducing vehicle wear
- Feedback - Provide feedback to the City on your service (missed service, metal cans dented in from being slammed into the back of the truck)
- Special service request - when you're walking down Jay or Upper Union and notice an issue, you can report it. Could be exposed as an API for any apps implementing task #5
City Official Portal
- Fleet Watch - view current location of all vehicles, and historic locations
- Truck tracker - view more details on an individual vehicle
- Route Efficiency - view when multiple vehicles have traced the same route. Possible consolidation of functions performed by vehicles
- Service Request View - View community requests for service for routing a lift gate truck, or monitoring quality of service, on a map.
How we built it
Caffeine and computers.
Challenges we ran into
Sleep. Tooling, because we didn't open source our DB library at work so we could use it this weekend, and we had to rewrite it from scratch bugs and all!

And some of the Google Maps API features we discovered creating the visualizations.
What we learned
Naps are very rejuvenating (except for Brian, who didn't).
Bring more front end devs, and a product person. 2 front end devs to 3 backend devs does not a good product make.

plowFinder. Its like Uber, for snow plows.
