Inspiration

Trying to run collaborative learning sessions for Supplemental Instruction for an Intro to programming course at Macomb Community College often faces engagement challenges when sessions are run remotely for online courses.

What it does

A platform for collaborative teaching/learning for basic programming. Combines a video chat platform with a collaborative IDE where students can directly work on the same remote Python file in real time. When the session is over, they will be able to download the file they worked on to continue working on it on their own or just keep for reference.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

Lack of experience, particularly with server side programming. Lots of time spent researching the best way to implement or project and then actually do the work.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting an instance of a server up and running locally in a virtual environment, and then getting out client to connect to it via a websocket we set up.

What we learned

We learned a lot more about how the relationship between the client application and the server application work together in general. While we by no means have achieved proficiency in working on the server side, a lot of aspects were demystified for us.

What's next for Collaborative IDE

We have planned to regularly meet up to continue working on this project throughout the rest of the semester when we are both on campus at the same time. This will give us the opportunity to continue helping each other learn new skills and add a level of accountability to each other to persist on the project.
