Inspiration

Many students struggle to understand concepts when learning alone. Most tools focus on reading or watching, but not on active collaboration. There is no simple space where students can draw, ask questions, and learn together in real time.

This inspired us to build a platform that makes learning more interactive and shared.

What it does

CollabCanvas is a real-time collaborative learning workspace where students can:

  • Draw and visualize ideas on a shared canvas
  • Organize concepts using structured blocks
  • Ask and answer questions in a live Q&A board
  • Get simple explanations using an AI tutor

All users in the same room can see updates instantly.

How we built it

We built the project as a full-stack web application.

  • Frontend handles canvas drawing, UI, and user interaction
  • Real-time sync allows multiple users to collaborate in the same room
  • AI tutor is integrated to provide simple explanations for any topic
  • Q&A system enables collaborative discussion between students

The focus was to keep the system simple, fast, and easy to use.

Challenges we ran into

  • Implementing real-time synchronization between multiple tabs/users
  • Handling AI responses and ensuring they are meaningful
  • Fixing UI issues like overlapping sections and layout spacing
  • Managing API limits and fallback behavior during development

What we learned

  • How to build real-time collaborative systems
  • How to design simple and usable UI for learning tools
  • How to integrate AI into an educational workflow
  • The importance of handling edge cases and failures gracefully

What's next

  • Improve AI accuracy and response quality
  • Add user accounts and saved learning sessions
  • Enhance UI for better usability
  • Expand learning tools and structured content

Impact

CollabCanvas turns learning into a shared experience instead of an isolated one. It helps students understand concepts visually, ask questions freely, and collaborate in real time.
