Inspiration

The idea for this application struck when we realized us as readers or some of us that who wants to start reading have very limited direct access to good literature. As students we dont always have the ability to buy all the books we want to read and that makes us depended on libraries but the fact is most of us dont have access to a library that meet our literary needs.

What it does

CoLib is a platform that allows dedicated and passionate individuals from the reading community to host a library in their own space that can act as a library for the other readers in the community. When someone registers to be a host , after a screening process where we make sure a Colib point will be utilized for the reason it was made , we will provide a collection of books specific to the reader needs of the locality. Readers can checkout books from these colib points in the conventional loan format. In the end we want to create an environment where we give passionate readers a haven and along with this promote reading among the youth.

How we built it

We built it by using Next js framework for the frontend part, Tailwind css for easy styling and for the backend and the database we have used the Supabase platform(a Backend as a Service) which uses postgresql for the creation and operations on the database for storing details about the different "colib points" and the metadata of the books in the inventory. We gather the location data from the user when the user visits the site and use it for searching the nearby "colib points" and books available from the database.

Challenges we ran into

We could not fully implement the backend part such as searching a book returns the books available in the nearby locality using the location parameters. We also ran into problems in case of scalability of the website but that inspired us to be creative and come up with some counter measures later on in time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are still very new to working with fullstack so this is a personal achievement for us to have integrated back end and front end to the extent that we have.

What we learned

Being beginners in the technology stack that we have used , all the information we consumed that help us built this application was new knowledge. From working with next.js to creating the database , everything was a fun and exciting learning curve for us. Apart from that we also realized the idea we thought was small and wasnt sure could have a large enough userbase , actually could be an amazing space for young readers all around the country and even maybe the world.

What's next for Colib.

Although right now we plan to start of as a library hosting app for readers without access to libraries , later we hope to be able to host colib points in cafes and workspaces where there is a scope to make revenue for the app to sustain our services. Along with "CoSpace" which is a page where aspiring writers can share their work on the platform for others in the community to see. We believe that would be the next step in sparking literary geniuses all across the country.
