Inspiration
The rapid proliferation of AI has led to a noticeable decline in deep, foundational learning. While AI boosts speed, it often discourages people from understanding how things are built from scratch—a fundamental human instinct tied to creativity and mastery.
This sparked a question: What if learning began by throwing users directly into the deep end—forcing them to grapple with the fundamentals of something they truly want to understand?
That idea became Coldstart.
⸻
What it Does
Coldstart is a learning-first application designed to push users out of passive consumption and into active creation. It intentionally removes hand-holding and instead immerses users in the core building blocks of a skill.
The app triggers the “lock-in” mindset—forcing focus, experimentation, and problem-solving—while still offering a polished and engaging learning experience starting from absolute basics.
⸻
How We Built It
The application was built using Godot, leveraging its strengths in rapid prototyping, UI design, and scripting. Godot allowed us to quickly iterate on interactions and create a responsive MVP within the hackathon timeframe.
⸻
Challenges We Ran Into
One major challenge was the telemetry interface, which proved to be unstable and difficult to scale. To ensure a functional MVP, we temporarily hard-coded key logic.
While this approach worked for demonstration purposes, we recognize that for long-term scalability the system needs to be redesigned. Future versions will replace hard-coded logic with a more flexible backend, likely transitioning the core logic into a Python-based application.
⸻
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of • Successfully implemented the core coding system • Built a working MVP under tight time constraints • Established a strong conceptual foundation for a new learning paradigm
⸻
What We Learned
Although Godot excels at coding and visual design, it is not particularly well-suited for application-level logic and scalability. Managing complex logic became increasingly difficult, highlighting the importance of choosing the right tech stack for long-term growth—not just rapid prototyping.
⸻
What’s Next for Coldstart
Currently, much of the logic is hard-coded and the app contains several bugs. In future iterations, we plan to: • Refactor the architecture for stability and scalability • Reduce bugs and improve overall UX • Expand beyond developers into other “cold start” domains such as: • Public speaking • Art & creative skills • Writing and storytelling
Our long-term vision is to make Coldstart a platform where anyone can learn anything by starting at zero—and truly understanding it.
