What it does
Community cinemas that want to welcome a new audience usually default to the biggest titles or to what their regulars already like. Cohereel plans a film season for two different audiences at once, so neither disappears into an average.
The programmer describes each audience through things its members love (artists, books, films) and sets practical limits: number of evenings, maximum runtime, licence budget and screening rights. Cohereel returns a programme that gives both groups a place.
In a live example, "Listening room regulars" (David Bowie, Talking Heads) and a "Speculative fiction club" (The Left Hand of Darkness, Arrival) get Moon and Sing Street for $370 of a $500 licence allowance. On raw Qloo affinity, the weaker audience's average fit is 0.83 for this slate, against 0.77 for a popularity-only slate on the same shortlist and constraints (Moon + Perfect Days).
How Qloo is used
- Qloo Search resolves every audience anchor and catalogue film to a Qloo entity (9 search requests in the example run). The programmer confirms each identity before any evidence is used.
- Two separate Qloo Insights queries, one per audience, return raw taste affinity for each film. Music and books inform the film shortlist, not just film genres.
- A missing affinity is treated as unknown, never as dislike.
The agent
Cohereel is a bounded planning agent, exposed as two MCP tools: resolve_programme and plan_programme. Its decisions are deterministic. A constraint solver enumerates every feasible slate within budget and picks the best one for the chosen objective ("Give both audiences a place" maximizes the weaker group's mean; "Welcome audience B first" prioritizes the invited group). There is no hidden LLM reasoning. The Tool activity tab shows every step, and the Taste evidence tab shows the raw score behind every decision.
Honest limits
Rank utility is ordinal and relative to the shortlist, not an attendance prediction. Licence costs and rights are operator-entered and illustrative until replaced. Cohereel books and buys nothing. It exports an operator brief with a checklist for rights, access and community feedback.
What's next
Larger catalogues, real distributor quotes, and validating the brief with both communities.
