Inspiration

The delivery of medical service In Canada. One of the team members is able to reflect on his experience with a close friend whose mother has a well known medical history for an ailment they experience. In times of urgency and emergency, the current state of medical service delivery in Canada leaves her waiting for countless hours to be able to get the support she needs, cause great stress for the family. Moreover Although patient centered care is fostered in the medical systems, racial biases still exist.

What it does

Cohera eliminates the need for a patient to converse with a human in order to be able to discuss the severity of an ailment they are facing and receive medical attention. More importantly, it frees up medical staff and eliminates all forms of bias that can come as a result of human interaction

How we built it

Developing Cohera involved team members specializing into three different subtasks that were all equally key to the project's success. A member of the team worked on developing the 'soul' of Cohera, which is essentially a Generative AI model that was programmed in python using the Cohere API. Tests and fine tuning were made to engineer an AI character that meets the current standards of patient centered care and nursing that would be required of such a health product. Another team member worked on designing the physical embodiment of Cohera, the hardware . Cohera was designed using Solidworks based on electronic components that were ideated and selected by the team as a whole. These designs were then fabricated and assembled. Finally, team members worked on developing the medical practitioner end of Cohera's interface. This is inform of a website where the current rankings for queued patients are displayed with an adequate summary of their conditions.

What we learned

A lot of important skills were greatly developed through this project including prompt engineering and GenAI development using the Cohere API in a python development environment, web development using Node.js, MongoDB, react and GoDaddy, firmware development using python and the Arduino IDE (C++), as well as 3D modelling using Solidworks.
