Inspiration
Traditional way of diagnosing epilepsy takes time and effort and is done in hospitals. It requires also massive investments in equipment. Our idea creates an automated way of diagnosing epilepsy by tracking and recording EEG. Additionally, this device calls automatically help in the time of the seizure. Cognisense is a solution that is wearable at home and can be used daily.
What it does
CogniSense makes use of the Muse brain sensing headband, which was originally developed for meditation. CogniSense is a platform to collect and analyze EEG data in realtime, to diagnose epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
For this we created an easy to use mobile phone application and cloud server that collects and automatically analyzes the data using machine learning.
Impact and Utility
There are many benefits in this solution.
1) It enhances,simplifies and speeds up the the diagnosis as it is possible to wear it long times at home.
2) The patient is also more likely to get help at the time of the seizure as the process of calling for help is automated. Continuous use is also possible for patients with severe drug-resistant epilepsy.
3) By using Cognisense the society will benefit - it moves the pre-diagnoses from hospitals to health care centers creating savings. It does not require other big investments in special equipment.
4) It is also noteworthy that 80% of epileptics live in developing countries (WHO) and do not get proper diagnosis nor treatment. Cognisense could easily be applicable also in that market.

In a broader sense, setting up CogniSense as a neuroscience analysis platform. This could be applied for any kind of big data analysis and realtime diagnostics for different devices or applications.
