Inspiration
Alzheimer’s is a silent, progressive condition that robs people of their memories, relationships, and independence. In India, cognitive health is often overlooked or diagnosed late, especially in aging populations. Inspired by our personal experiences and stories from caregivers, we wanted to create a tool that not only detects early warning signs but also empowers individuals through engaging, stigma-free interaction. That’s how Cognipal was born — your AI-powered cognitive buddy.
What it does
Cognipal is a gamified platform that uses AI to help detect early signs of Alzheimer’s and support cognitive wellness. It features interactive memory and recognition games, visual cues, daily cognitive nudges, and progress tracking. The system adapts to the user’s behavior and provides insights on cognitive patterns, helping caregivers and health professionals intervene at the right time. The project’s goal is to offer a friendly, non-invasive tool that feels more like play than a clinical test.
How we built it
We used React for the frontend, styled with Tailwind CSS to deliver a clean, responsive, and engaging UI. For the game logic, we implemented mini-games like sequence recall and object recognition using JavaScript. User data is stored in Firebase for real-time updates and session tracking. We integrated OpenAI’s GPT for journaling prompts and emotional support features, making Cognipal not just functional but emotionally intelligent too. All development was done collaboratively on GitHub.
Challenges we ran into
Building a cognitive tool that's both accurate and engaging was the toughest part. Designing meaningful games that are scientifically relevant yet fun to play took a lot of research and iteration. Another challenge was managing user progress data across sessions while keeping privacy intact. We also had to consider how to design for users who may have memory or attention limitations — accessibility was a key focus.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully integrated real-time cognitive game mechanics
- Created a sleek, user-friendly interface from scratch
- Built a journaling feature powered by GPT for emotional connection
- Designed the project with accessibility and empathy at its core
- Got positive feedback from early testers who found it helpful and enjoyable
What we learned
We learned how to balance health-tech seriousness with user engagement. From UI/UX to AI prompt engineering, every piece taught us how to design for empathy, not just functionality. We also learned about Firebase integration, state management in React, and how to turn user interactions into useful, trackable cognitive data.
What's next for CogniPal
We’re working on expanding our game library based on psychological models of cognitive decline. We plan to integrate machine learning models that can give early warnings based on user behavior. In the long term, we aim to partner with healthcare providers and NGOs for real-world testing and bring Cognipal to elderly care homes as a digital companion. We also want to add multilingual support and voice-based interaction for greater accessibility.
