CodPet --- The Management Layer for AI Coding Companions

Inspiration

AI can now generate beautiful coding companions in seconds with Codex and the Hatch Pet skill.

However, as developers collect dozens or even hundreds of companions, a new problem appears:

  • How do you quickly find the right companion?
  • How do you organize a growing collection?
  • How do you switch companions without interrupting your workflow?

We experienced this problem firsthand after installing more than 100 Codex pets.

CodPet started from a simple idea:

Codex solved companion creation. What comes next is building the management layer for AI companions.

What it does

CodPet focuses on the complete lifecycle of AI coding companions.

A curated collection of high-quality Codex pets that developers can discover, preview, and install.

⚡ Companion Manager

A fast companion management tool that helps developers search, organize, preview, favorite, and quickly switch between pets.

Our first version explored instant pet switching through a lightweight local manager.

The experience revealed an important insight:

AI companions need a stable management layer, not just a creation tool.

🎨 Companion Studio

A personalized creation workflow for individuals, creators, brands, and development teams that need consistent visual identity and complete animation sets.

How we built it

Codex and the Hatch Pet skill accelerated companion creation, but every pet still goes through human review and refinement.

We manually curate designs, improve animations, organize metadata, and maintain quality through cod.pet.

We also built an initial companion manager prototype with local indexing and fast switching capabilities.

Through this process, we discovered that maintaining compatibility with rapidly evolving AI development tools is itself a major product challenge.

Challenges we ran into

The AI companion ecosystem is evolving quickly.

Creating companions is becoming easier every month, but managing them at scale remains unsolved.

Our first implementation showed that fast switching was possible, but changes in Codex behavior could affect compatibility.

This led us to a bigger challenge:

How can we build a stable companion management layer that works independently from a single AI coding environment?
