Inspiration
I loved the early openai supply co shop, but was never lucky enough to purchase merch. Also, I'm a big fan of openai codex team and how they communicate on twitter. I assembled a list of codex team before Jason Liu released his own one (with a few more people than on mine). This project has been on my mind for a long time. Build week was the opportunity to share it.
I really wanted to have codex create its own merch end to end. I love the idea of finding creative ways to bridge the gap between LLMs and real world, of making them interact with real things. Also, I think it's super funny to have an LLM act as an Art Director.
What it does
Basically turns trend signals from X into real purchaseable merch, via Printful. Could be optimised in many directions. But I think it's cute and likeable.
How we built it
Raw dogged it with my imagination and all the different versions of codex (and the gpt model family) of the last 5-6 months, or so.
Challenges we ran into
Today, biggest challenges for humans with these kind of apps is providing environment variables (lol). Joke aside, last versions of models (Sol ultra for instance) are becoming so precise and picky when it comes to preview vs production security that it's somehow quite tedious as human to follow with all the flags and security variables codex adds to the project.
Still, one of the biggest challenges was actually to make codex create merch that has... taste.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I think the overall pipeline is quite nice. I've purchased one merch and gave it to my best friend (the one on photo). He seems to like it.
What we learned
Like always when working with codex, a lot. Biggest thing this time was how to steer codex (by prompting mostly), into being more natural, less brainy, less "developer" when he produces client-facing copy, visuals, web pages, and so on.
What's next for Codex Merch
I think there is a super strong case for such a signal to product pipeline in the fashion industry. Not the biggest fan of fast fashion, but Zara could clearly be interested in Social Media signal to products. And in Switzerland we have Richemond who could be interested in hyper personalisation.
