Project 1 - Flicks

Flicks is a movies app using the The Movie Database API.

Time spent: 12 hours spent in total

User Stories

The following required functionality is complete:

  • [X] User can view a list of movies currently playing in theaters from The Movie Database.
  • [X] Poster images are loaded using the UIImageView category in the AFNetworking library.
  • [X] User sees a loading state while waiting for the movies API.
  • [X] User can pull to refresh the movie list.

The following optional features are implemented:

  • [X] User sees an error message when there's a networking error.
  • [X] Movies are displayed using a CollectionView instead of a TableView.
  • [ ] User can search for a movie.
  • [ ] All images fade in as they are loading.
  • [X] Customize the UI.

The following additional features are implemented:

  • [X] Added a 'Heart' Button so you can heart a certain movie
  • [X] Added a detail page for each cell! (It turns out we are doing this next week and I probably did not do it the cleanest way so I removed the segue)
  • [X] User can switch between table and collection view

Notes

Describe any challenges encountered while building the app. -The activity instance in the EZLoader was challenging to understand. The majority of kids in our class just used the built in delay. -The collectionView cells were tricky to manipulate. It took more time to understand how to manipulate those cells than each table cell. -When I added the uibutton to the cell it made the "didSelectRow" harder to activate for some reason. -It was challenging trying to get the data to pass from the first viewcontroller to the second viewcontroller because even when I prepared for the segue it still came after the view loaded. -The final challenge (the one I could not figure out) was how to do the searchbar. The issue was that the example had two arrays of data but our app was using a NSDictionary and I wasn't sure how to turn that into an array or manipulate another dictionary that contained the searched value.
