Inspiration

Developers often spend a significant amount of time reviewing code for bugs, security issues, inefficient logic, and poor coding practices. We wanted to build more than a simple AI chatbot that explains code. The idea behind CodeLens AI was to create an intelligent code-review assistant that analyzes code, identifies potential problems, explains why they matter, and provides actionable suggestions for improvement.

What it does

CodeLens AI acts as an AI-powered code review assistant. Users can submit their code and receive an automated analysis covering:

  • 🐞 Potential bugs and logical issues
  • πŸ” Security vulnerabilities and risky coding patterns
  • ⚑ Performance and efficiency concerns
  • 🧹 Code quality and maintainability
  • πŸ’‘ Improvement suggestions
  • πŸ“– Clear explanations of detected issues
  • 🎯 Prioritized findings based on their severity

Instead of simply pointing out an error, CodeLens AI focuses on explaining the problem, its impact, and how to improve it.

How we built it

We built CodeLens AI using a combination of modern web technologies and AI-based code analysis.

Core stack:

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Backend: Python
  • AI: Large Language Model-based code analysis
  • Code analysis: Structured prompts and rule-based checks
  • Version control: Git & GitHub

The application processes submitted code, sends it through the analysis pipeline, categorizes detected issues by severity and type, and presents the results through a developer-friendly interface.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making the AI analysis useful rather than generating generic suggestions. We had to design prompts and the analysis flow so that CodeLens AI could distinguish between actual problems and harmless coding patterns.

We also faced challenges around:

  • Getting consistent AI-generated reviews
  • Categorizing issues by severity
  • Explaining technical problems in beginner-friendly language
  • Handling different programming languages and coding styles
  • Designing a clean interface for displaying multiple findings

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that CodeLens AI goes beyond basic code explanation and approaches code review as a structured developer workflow.

Our biggest accomplishments include:

  • Building a functional AI-powered code review system
  • Combining AI reasoning with structured code analysis
  • Providing actionable feedback instead of only detecting errors
  • Creating a developer-focused interface
  • Turning a real-world developer pain point into a practical AI solution

Most importantly, we built something that we can actually demonstrate with real code and real-world scenarios.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that building an AI application is not just about connecting an LLM to a frontend. The quality of the problem definition, prompts, processing pipeline, validation, and user experience matters just as much.

We also gained practical experience with:

  • AI-assisted software development
  • Prompt engineering
  • Backend and frontend integration
  • Git and GitHub workflows
  • Structuring AI-generated outputs
  • Designing applications around real developer problems

What's next for CodeLens AI

We want to evolve CodeLens AI from an AI code reviewer into a more complete AI-powered developer security and quality platform.

Future plans include:

  • 🌐 Support for more programming languages
  • πŸ” Static analysis + AI analysis hybrid system
  • πŸ” Dedicated security vulnerability scanning
  • πŸ“Š Code quality and technical-debt scoring
  • πŸ”„ GitHub repository and Pull Request integration
  • πŸ€– AI-generated fixes with developer approval
  • πŸ“ˆ Developer/team code-quality dashboards
  • πŸ§ͺ Automated test-case generation
  • πŸ›‘οΈ Continuous security monitoring

Our long-term vision is to make CodeLens AI a developer's intelligent second pair of eyesβ€”helping them write safer, cleaner, and more maintainable code before it reaches production.
