CoDefend - Decentralized Malware Analysis Chrome Extension

We created a Decentralized Anti-Virus Chrome extension called CoDefend. Featuring the ability to scan files for viruses before it ever reaches your computer, and malicious URLs.

Project Overview

We created a Cybersecurity Chrome Extension for nwHacks 2025. Our Chrome Extension encompasses two innovative features:

  • Virus Scanning of files before the user downloads them
  • Informs user if they visit a malicious website via a popup

To use our Chrome extension, simply add CoDefend to your Google Chrome browser.

The Inspiration

Online security threats are growing more sophisticated, and protecting ourselves from malicious files is becoming increasingly important. However, many users don’t take adequate precautions when downloading files, often because they’re unaware of the risks or find security tools cumbersome. We wanted to make online security simpler and more accessible—leading to the creation of CoDefend, a streamlined, reliable anti-virus scanner built directly into your browser.

We built CoDefend using:

  • Express (for backend server processing)

How to Set Up

  • Install CoDefend from GitHub.
  • Enable the extension in your browser.
  • Upon downloading files, CoDefend plugin will pop-up immediately with the option to scan the files for viruses before they’re saved.
  • Enjoy peace of mind with every download!
