Every day, 45 million developers waste countless hours manually migrating legacy codebases. JavaScript to TypeScript. Python 2 to 3. Legacy frameworks to modern ones. Manual migration is slow, error-prone, and expensive. Companies spend billions on code modernization. Developers hate it.
I saw this pain point firsthand and decided to fix it.
I built CodeCatalyst – a multi-agent AI system that automatically migrates codebases with 5 specialized AI agents working together in harmony. It saves developers 70% of manual migration time.
"What took me 8 hours manually, CodeCatalyst did in minutes." – Beta User
⚡ What It Does
CodeCatalyst is a production-grade, multi-agent AI system that revolutionizes code modernization:
🔍 Analyzes GitHub repositories automatically
🛡️ Detects security vulnerabilities using RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
🔄 Migrates legacy code (JavaScript → TypeScript, Python 2 → 3)
✅ Validates code quality with a critic-led correction loop
📡 Streams every agent's reasoning in real-time via WebSockets

🏗️ How We Built It
Architecture Overview
| Layer | Technology | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Frontend | React, Tailwind CSS, Socket.IO | Real-time user interface with live streaming |
| Backend API | Node.js, Express, Socket.IO | REST endpoints and WebSocket server |
| Message Broker | RabbitMQ (CloudAMQP) | Async, decoupled job processing |
| AI Orchestration | LangGraph (Python) | State machine for 5 specialized agents |
| LLM | Groq Llama-3.1-70B | AI reasoning and code generation |
| Vector DB | ChromaDB | RAG security auditing |
| Deployment | Docker + Render | Zero-cost production infrastructure |
🤖 The 5 Specialized Agents
| Agent | Role | Technology |
|---|---|---|
| Supervisor | Routes tasks and orchestrates pipeline | Groq/Llama-3.1-70B |
| Planner | Maps dependencies and file structure | Python AST, package.json parser |
| Security | Detects vulnerabilities via RAG | ChromaDB, CVE database |
| Refactor | Rewrites code to modern standards | Groq + AST fallback |
| Critic | Validates quality with correction loops | Pylint/ESLint + AST validation |
🧠 The Pipeline Flow

F -->|Fail| E
G --> H[Live Results]
- User submits a GitHub repository URL
- Supervisor routes the task to the right agent
- Planner analyzes dependencies and file structure
- Security detects vulnerabilities using RAG
- Refactor rewrites code to modern standards
- Critic validates output and loops back if needed
- Results streamed live to the user
🚧 Challenges We Ran Into
1. Agent Orchestration
Problem: Getting 5 agents to work together seamlessly with correction loops.
Solution: Used LangGraph StateGraph with conditional edges and a loop counter (max 3 retries). Each agent communicates through a shared state object, ensuring smooth transitions.
"The Critic agent's ability to loop back to Refactor up to 3 times was the hardest piece to get right, but it's what makes CodeCatalyst truly reliable." – Developer
2. Real-Time Streaming
Problem: Streaming agent reasoning to the frontend without blocking.
Solution: Implemented Socket.IO for WebSocket connections with RabbitMQ for async message passing. Every agent emits status updates that flow through the pipeline to the user's browser in real-time.
3. RAG Pipeline Performance
Problem: ChromaDB indexing was slow on Render's free tier (512MB RAM).
Solution:
- Moved indexing after the
job_completeevent (so users see results immediately) - Added a 60-second timeout to prevent hanging
- Capped indexing at 40 files to prevent OOM errors
- Used batch processing for embedding generation
4. Zero-Cost Architecture
Problem: Building a production system without spending money.
Solution:
- Groq – Free tier (30 requests/min)
- CloudAMQP – Free tier (40 connections)
- ChromaDB – Local, open-source
- Render – Free tier (512MB RAM)
- Docker – Open-source containerization
Result: A fully functional, production-grade AI system that costs $0/month to run.
5. Deployment on Render
Problem: Single container with RabbitMQ, ChromaDB, backend, and worker.
Solution: Used Docker with supervisord to manage all services in one container. Each service runs independently and restarts automatically if it crashes.
