Inspiration
As developers, we spend a lot of time solving coding problems on platforms like LeetCode and discussing solutions with friends on Discord. We wondered: Why not combine both experiences into a single platform?
We wanted to create a place where developers could not only practice coding but also compete with each other in real-time, discuss interview experiences, collaborate in rooms, and grow together as a community. This idea became CodeArena.
What it does
CodeArena is a community-driven coding platform that combines competitive programming with real-time collaboration.
Features include:
- Real-time 1v1 coding battles between developers.
- ELO-based ranking system and global leaderboard.
- Coding problem practice with multiple difficulty levels.
- Community discussion rooms for DSA, React, Java, System Design, and interview preparation.
- Create and publish custom coding questions with test cases.
- Real-time chat and room invitations.
- Personal developer profiles with battle history, submissions, reputation, and statistics.
- Online code execution using Judge0 with support for multiple programming languages.
How we built it
Frontend
- React.js
- Tailwind CSS
- Monaco Editor
- Socket.io Client
Backend
- Node.js
- Express.js
- Socket.io
- JWT Authentication
Database
- MySQL
Additional Services
- Judge0 for code execution
- Redis for matchmaking and real-time features
For matchmaking, we used queue-based logic and data structures to efficiently pair players searching for opponents with similar preferences and difficulty levels.
Socket.io powers all real-time functionality including coding battles, matchmaking, chat rooms, notifications, and live updates.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing a real-time matchmaking system that could quickly pair players.
- Synchronizing battle progress between two users without delays.
- Integrating Judge0 and handling code execution results consistently across multiple programming languages.
- Building a reusable function-signature system for dynamically generating code templates.
- Managing real-time chat rooms and notifications using WebSockets.
- Handling edge cases in battle results, ELO calculations, and submission comparisons.
- Ensuring a smooth user experience while maintaining performance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully built a fully functional real-time coding battle system.
- Integrated Judge0 to support code execution for multiple languages.
- Created a dynamic code template generation system using Monaco Editor.
- Built community discussion rooms with real-time messaging.
- Implemented ELO ratings and a global leaderboard.
- Developed a complete question creation and management system.
- Designed and deployed a full-stack application from scratch.
- Turned an idea inspired by LeetCode and Discord into a working platform.
What we learned
Throughout this project we learned:
- Real-time application architecture with Socket.io.
- Matchmaking and queue management systems.
- WebSocket communication patterns.
- Redis caching and real-time state management.
- Judge0 integration and code execution pipelines.
- Building scalable REST APIs with Node.js.
- Designing multiplayer experiences for developers.
- Managing complex frontend state in React applications.
- Database design and optimization using MySQL.
Most importantly, we learned how different parts of a large-scale application work together to create a seamless user experience.
What's next for CodeArena
Our vision is to turn CodeArena into a complete developer ecosystem.
Future plans include:
- Team coding battles (2v2 and 5v5).
- AI-powered interview simulations.
- Video and voice discussion rooms.
- Contest hosting and scheduled tournaments.
- Company-specific interview preparation rooms.
- Community moderation and reputation systems.
- Friend systems and direct challenges.
- Advanced analytics and coding performance insights.
- Mobile application support.
- Large-scale competitive programming events with rewards and achievements.
Our goal is to make CodeArena the place where developers learn, compete, collaborate, and grow together.
