Inspiration
When we heard the theme was woman empowerment one of the first ideas we came up with was Code X Connect. As a beginner in coding, it was very difficult for us to find motivation to learn code and a lot of us needed someone to help and support us as we learned the new material. However, it was very difficult to find girls of the same level to practice and learn with. This was our major inspiration for creating this app. We wanted to find a way to make learning code easy and fun, and motivational for everyone and at the same time build a community of women who love coding.
What it does
Code X Connect matches the user with a partner based on their preferences and level in code. Once the user has been matched, the user and their "buddy" can work together to complete an easy to follow curriculum provided by the app, through weekly calls. By the end of the course they will be able to build a lasting connection and create their own project which they can share on the app. Code X Connect also has a wide variety of communities dedicated to minorities of women in tech.
How we built it
We built a prototype of our app with Figma, and the website for our app with html and css.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first time all of us were in a hackathon, and also the first time any of us used figma. Due to this we came across many challenges that we had to battle.
The Scroll Feature - To make text scroll in figma it requires you to be able to group a bunch of text and then frame it. However, once you have done that it is very difficult to change the text and images that are inside the frame. It took us quite a while to figure out how to change what was in the frame without having to redo the entire page.
The Website - In the website, we came across a problem in the positioning. Even though we thought we coded the images to be in a certain position, they seemed to be somewhere else on the actual website. We worked around this problem by changing the layout to avoid this problem entirely.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of how we were able to create an entire app prototype and complete a website in just 24 hours. We are especially proud of this achievement because we worked with people who we hadn't met before hand to create something really cool!
What we learned
We learned many technical skills, on how to use figma, html, css, and more, however we also learned many life skills such as, collaboration, time management, and problem solving. We are confident that we will be able to use the skills in the future to do great things!
What's next for Code X Connect
Complete Our Code - Our prototype is not completely working as of now, and we want to complete the code, by gaining more data on our app, creating a machine learning algorithm to match partners, and connecting our app to the cloud
Launch it - We want to launch our app online to attract more users and create an impact on many women all around the world.
