Inspiration

What inspired me the most was the 007 games and movies. I liked the idea of a stealth-based heist where the player has to avoid security systems, hack computers, and break into a vault. I wanted to create my own version of that experience as a fast-paced 2D top-down game.

What it does

Code Breaker is a 2D top-down heist game where the player breaks into a secured building and tries to reach the vault. Along the way, the player can collect cash, hack computers to discover pieces of the vault combination, and avoid security lasers. After finding all three parts of the combination, the player can enter the correct code to open the vault.

How I built it

I built the game in Unity using C#. I used Unity's 2D physics and collision system for player movement, interactions, and hazards. I created systems for computer hacking, vault combination tracking, keypad input, money collection, and laser detection. I also used Unity's UI system for the hacking prompts, vault code display, timer, and other gameplay information.

Challenges I ran into

One of my biggest challenges was getting all of the different systems to communicate correctly. I had to connect the computer hacking system to the vault system so that each computer would provide the correct part of the combination. I also had to work through collision and trigger issues with the player, vault, computers, and lasers. Getting the UI and input to respond correctly while the player was interacting with objects also required a lot of debugging.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud that I was able to build a complete playable heist game by myself within the hackathon. I successfully implemented the core gameplay loop, including hacking computers, collecting the vault combination, entering the code, avoiding lasers, collecting money, and opening the vault. I am also proud of how I turned my original ideas into a functioning game under a limited amount of time.

What I learned

I learned a lot about developing a game by myself under a time limit. I gained even more experience with Unity, C#, collision detection, UI, animations, coroutines, and having different scripts communicate with each other. I also learned how important it is to test features individually and debug problems as soon as they appear instead of trying to build everything at once.

What's next for Code Breaker

I would like to expand the game with more levels, more complicated vault combinations, additional security systems, guards or other enemies, and more ways for the player to approach each heist. I would also like to improve the visuals, sound effects, animations, and overall polish to make the game feel more like a complete stealth-heist experience.
