Inspiration
We came across Reddit threads where adults discussed their experiences guiding their older parents through technology. Redditors shared about spending 30 minutes to an hour on the phone teaching their parents to use basic phone functions like scanning QR codes, handling software updates, or resetting passwords. It was a mix of frustration and love—people wanting their parents to stay connected to the digital world but struggling with patience and time. In the US, as services like banking and healthcare move exclusively online, this digital divide becomes a barrier to essential services. We built Coco to be the patient, empathetic bridge that families need.
What it does
Coco is an AI-powered voice companion accessible via a standard phone call—no apps, no touchscreens, no friction. For the senior, it provides step-by-step guidance for tech tasks. Key features include:
- Dynamically altering the tone and pace when the user sounds confused/requests to speak slower
- Scam detection by monitoring conversation context to identify high risk scenarios
- Privacy guardrails by proactively reminding users to never reveal sensitive information like passwords, PINs, or banking details
For caretakers: It offers a "guardian" dashboard. Coco monitors calls in real-time to detect scams or cognitive distress. If a user gets stuck in a loop or a scammer is mentioned, Coco intervenes and instantly alerts the family via SMS and a live web dashboard.
How we built it
Voice Interface:
- Twilio for PSTN connection
- ElevenLabs Conversational AI for voice synthesis and speech recognition Brain:
- Google Gemini 2.5 Flash for semantic intent routing to find the right instructions and asynchronous scam analysis on call transcripts Infrastructure:
- Next.js for caretaker dashboard frontend
- Supabase for database
Challenges we ran into
- Latency vs. Accuracy of voice agent
- Balancing complexity and being able to deploy and deliver
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Integrating our backend with Elevenlabs and making good use of their functions
What we learned
- Version control
What's next for Coco
- SMS alerts instead of alerts on dashboard
- Richer ingested data and UI flows
