Inspiration

I developed COCA 16515 because the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) words helped me a lot while preparing for IELTS, which was required for my Canadian Permanent Resident application. I realized that memorizing random word lists wasn’t effective, but studying a frequency-based, context-rich vocabulary with clear definitions, examples, usage, and pronunciation made a huge difference in my learning. I wanted to create a tool that could help others study smarter, track progress, and truly master these words.

What it does

COCA 16515 helps learners master the most useful 16,515 English words with a focus on:

  • Bilingual definitions (English–Chinese)
  • Context-rich examples and multiple usages
  • Pronunciation guides
  • Progress tracking, flashcards, quizzes, and mastery goals

Users can study daily, track XP, maintain streaks, and see progress toward mastering the full COCA word list.

How we built it

The app is a web-based platform with:

  • Flashcards for daily learning
  • Quiz module to test retention
  • Word browser for searching and reviewing vocabulary
  • Dashboard to track progress, XP, streaks, and mastery level

Words and examples were sourced from the COCA 16,515 list. I implemented a dynamic learning flow so learners see words in context and can revisit challenging words easily. The platform is designed to be intuitive and engaging, allowing learners to set personal goals and track their improvement over time.

Challenges we ran into

  • Structuring the large COCA word dataset for interactive study
  • Designing a user-friendly dashboard that balances daily goals with long-term mastery
  • Handling bilingual definitions and examples consistently without cluttering the interface
  • Maintaining engagement, so learners don’t feel overwhelmed by thousands of words

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully integrated all 16,515 COCA words with definitions, examples, usage, and pronunciation
  • Created a clear progress tracking system that motivates daily learning
  • Built a bilingual, context-rich interface that works for both English learners and Chinese speakers
  • Turned personal experience into a scalable learning tool that others can use

What we learned

  • Frequency-based vocabulary like COCA makes a huge difference in language learning efficiency
  • Context and examples are more effective than rote memorization
  • Designing for user motivation and daily habits is as important as the content itself
  • Building a large-scale learning app requires balancing data complexity with user simplicity

What's next for COCA 16515

  • Add adaptive learning algorithms to automatically prioritize challenging words
  • Introduce spaced repetition and smart quizzes for faster mastery
  • Expand bilingual support beyond Chinese–English
  • Add mobile support to allow learners to study anytime, anywhere
