Inspiration ✨
We've taken inspiration from the Disney Animated Movie Big Hero 6 where the character 'Baymax' is seen addressing physical health issues for the characters in the movie. Thus taking on this idea, we decided to develop our own virtual 'Baymax' named 'Coastmin' (haha we're funny for that one!). Our intention of using a cute design of a cartoon character was to have a sense of familiarity and comfort for our users.
What it does 🤔
Coastmin is a friendly and interactive service that allows users to take a break from their stress-induced lifestyle to relax and focus on the present through a variety of activities ranging from breathing exercises, meditation, mindfulness and more! The aim of this app is to enable people to direct their focus on their wellbeing without any surrounding distractions,
How we built it 🖥
Through the languages JavaScript, HTML and CSS, we created buttons, forms and alert boxes as a way of communicating information with the computer and the user. We formed a function for each exercise and recalled it when the correlated button is pressed.
Challenges we ran into 🏃♀️
During the breathing exercise function, attempting to implement progress bar was quite difficult and challenging as we kept running into errors or a glitchy bar that would only work half the time. After reading multiple documentations online, we were finally able to add this feature to help users regulate their breathing cycles. For our final touch we decided to add a toggle button that would play ambient rain sounds for users to relax to however this proved to be very challenging as we constantly faced obstacles with the program not uploading the files etc. However this proved to be a beneficial learning experience as after we crossed all the hurdles, we were able to add this "toggle button" to our plethora of coding knowledge.
What we learned 📚
We learnt how to add a toggle button by stylizing it using CSS as well as how to add a progress bar in a certain duration. Making use of object-oriented programming
What's next for CoastMin 💭
This is only the beginning. Coastmin absolutely has the potential to be further developed by adding more exercises and features - perhaps even going the lengths to personalizing a routine for a user using a sign up and sign in page which could be implemented by using php. We already have ideas of adding a dismissible alert reminder that pops up every so often to give health tips such as hydrating and sleep tips.
