Inspiration

As a biochemist, Modeline believe that the knowledge of sciences (biology and chemistry) should facilitate the creation of real-life solutions to everyday problems. Therefore, looking at the current situation with CO2 emissions, Modeline collaborated with computer scientists, an engineer and a UI/UX designer to create CO2by. Therefore, the motivation behind CO2by is the need to create something that will fix a major global problem. We are motivated by the need to make a positive impact on society, by applying our knowledge to create novel solutions to existing problems. What got Modeline thinking about a filter based carbon capture technology was her personal experience with using a glass fiber based to separate a specific group of nucleic acids from a heterogeneous mix of biological molecules in her lab. Applying this same logic, we decided to explore the possibility of recovering CO2 from the heterogeneous mix of compounds found in car exhaust, using a carbon scrubbing technology. We were interested in car exhaust because we know that transportation account for 27% CO2 emissions just in Canada.

What it does

CO2By is a company that captures carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from vehicles and transforms them into a valuable commodity. Their cutting-edge technology captures the CO2 and stores it safely in capsules that can be sold on their marketplace to companies looking to offset their carbon footprint. By doing so, CO2By helps to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere, contributing to a more sustainable future.

How we are planning to built it

Inspired by Remora and Aramco's vision, we are planning to build a more compact and scaleable device that mounts to smaller vehicles and captures carbon at the very source and later realased into CO2By's and personal capsules which will later be sold on CO2By's marketplace.

Challenges we ran into

Collabrating with people from diverse background and coming to a conclusion out of 10+ ideas was one of the hardest hurdles.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A new approach to reduce carbon footprint at the source and selling it to industries that need CO2 as raw material.

What we learned

Our team's biggest learning during this hackathon is the absorption technique using layers of Zeolite beads to capture carbon and let other two harmless gases release. Also the fact that so many industries use CO2 as their raw materials. We were also surprised by the amount of yearly global CO2 emission and it's catastrophic effects.

What's next for CO2By - Capturing Carbon, Creating Change

We ask funding for building the CO2By's carbon capturing device for commercial vehicles.
