Inspiration
The inspiration was because we were curious about our personal effect on the Co2 emissions and knowledge is the first step to improving ourselves.
What it does
It takes your input on your habits and gives an estimate of your effect on carbon emissions. It ranks you in comparison to the rest of the country and gives you a score based on that. Then it suggests with different ways that you could help to reduce your carbon footprint in your everyday life.
How we built it
we found datasets online regarding our topics and calculated how much of a carbon footprint on average does a single use case of that creates. Then we took input from user on their usage of those specific things and calculated an estimate of their carbon footprint. We then found data on different ways a person can improve their carbon footprint through specific categories and provided those to the user.
Challenges we ran into
A huge challenge we had was the brainstorming and coming up with the idea as it felt very difficult to come up with a solution for a physical problem using software. Another problem was our lack of front end developing knowledge which put us at a disadvantage as we were executing everything in the terminal. We also spent a lot of time trying to learn front end development during the competition which meant less time spent on the actual project and the overall project didn't come out as refined as we would have expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of being able to successfully collaborating with each other using source control as we have had a problem with that in the past competitions. We also were able to go back to brainstorming when we felt like something was off without hesitation.
What we learned
We learned a few libraries really well that we did not know how to use before like pandas. We also attempted some front end development which did not make it to the end product but still gave us some experience on something we have never done before.
What's next for Co2 Emission Calculator
We want to be able to refine the code into something which is more user friendly and move it onto a web server for it to be able to be used by the general public. We also want to make the suggestions for a person to make themselves more sustainable to act like a shopping portal where they can directly purchase clothing items or airline tickets, etc from our website by which we can track their progress and give them feedback on that as well making our project more user interactive.
