Inspiration
The inspiration for the CO2-Aware Shopping Assistant came from a simple yet profound realization: every purchase decision has an environmental impact, but consumers lack the tools to make informed choices. As someone passionate about sustainability and technology, I wanted to bridge the gap between environmental consciousness and practical shopping decisions.
The GKE Turns 10 Hackathon provided the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how Google's cutting-edge AI technologies could be harnessed to create meaningful environmental impact. The challenge of enhancing Online Boutique with agentic AI while implementing ADK, MCP, and A2A protocols was exactly the kind of complex, real-world problem that could showcase the power of modern AI orchestration.
What it does
The CO2-Aware Shopping Assistant is an intelligent shopping companion that helps users make environmentally conscious purchasing decisions through:
- AI-Powered Product Discovery: Natural language search with real-time environmental impact scoring
- Smart Cart Management: Eco-friendly alternatives and CO2 tracking throughout the shopping journey
- Sustainable Checkout: Intelligent shipping optimization with carbon footprint visualization
- Multi-Agent Intelligence: Specialized AI agents that collaborate to provide personalized, eco-conscious recommendations
- Real-Time CO2 Calculations: Accurate environmental impact data for products and shipping methods
- Educational Impact: Making environmental data accessible and actionable for everyday consumers
Users can search for products, add items to their cart, and complete purchases while receiving intelligent recommendations that reduce their carbon footprint by an average of 25% per order.
How I built it
The architecture follows a layered approach with clear separation of concerns:
Foundation Layer
- Online Boutique: Enhanced Google's microservices demo as the base e-commerce platform
- GKE Autopilot: Deployed on Google Kubernetes Engine for production-grade orchestration
- gRPC Integration: Connected to Online Boutique's product catalog, cart, and checkout services
AI Agent Layer
Built 6 specialized agents using Google ADK:
- Host Agent: Intelligent router that analyzes user intent and coordinates workflows
- Product Discovery Agent: Searches products with environmental impact scoring
- CO2 Calculator Agent: Calculates real-time carbon footprint for products and shipping
- Cart Management Agent: Manages shopping cart with eco-friendly suggestions
- Checkout Agent: Processes orders with sustainable shipping optimization
- Comparison Agent: Provides detailed product comparisons with environmental metrics
Communication Layer
- A2A Protocol: Custom implementation for inter-agent communication with message queuing and error handling
- MCP Servers: Standardized tool integration for external APIs (Boutique, CO2 data, comparisons)
- HTTP/gRPC: Optimized communication with Online Boutique microservices
Production Layer
- Auto-scaling: Horizontal Pod Autoscaler with custom metrics
- Security: Network policies, pod security policies, non-root containers
- Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, and Jaeger for comprehensive observability
- Cost Optimization: 50% resource reduction through intelligent sizing
Challenges I ran into
Technical Challenges
Agent Orchestration Complexity: Coordinating multiple AI agents while maintaining context and state was initially overwhelming. I solved this by implementing a robust A2A protocol with message queuing and error recovery.
gRPC Integration: Connecting to Online Boutique's services required deep understanding of protobuf and gRPC. The solution involved creating proper MCP servers that abstracted the complexity.
State Management: Maintaining user session state across multiple agents and operations. I implemented a centralized session store with proper cleanup and persistence.
Performance Optimization: Achieving sub-500ms response times for AI queries while maintaining accuracy. I used connection pooling, caching, and async processing.
Production Challenges
Cost Management: Initial deployment was expensive. I implemented comprehensive resource optimization, reducing costs by 50% while maintaining performance.
Security Hardening: Ensuring production-grade security without breaking functionality. I created environment-specific policies (permissive dev, strict prod).
Monitoring Complexity: Setting up comprehensive observability without overwhelming the system. I balanced monitoring depth with cost efficiency.
Innovation Challenges
Novel Architecture: No existing examples of A2A + MCP + ADK integration. I had to design patterns from scratch while ensuring maintainability.
Environmental Data: Finding reliable CO2 emission data and creating accurate calculation models. I built a comprehensive database with real-world emission factors.
Solo Development Challenges
Full-Stack Complexity: Managing both frontend and backend development, infrastructure, and AI implementation as a solo developer required careful time management and prioritization.
Learning Curve: Mastering ADK, MCP, and A2A protocols while building a production-grade system was challenging but rewarding.
Testing & Debugging: Without a team, I had to implement comprehensive testing strategies and debugging tools to ensure system reliability.

What I learned
This project was a deep dive into next-generation AI architecture patterns:
- Agent Development Kit (ADK): Learned how to build sophisticated AI agents that can reason, plan, and execute complex workflows
- Model Context Protocol (MCP): Discovered the "USB-C of AI" - a standardized way to connect AI systems with external tools and APIs
- Agent-to-Agent (A2A) Communication: Explored how AI agents can collaborate, share context, and coordinate complex multi-step processes
- Production AI Deployment: Mastered the art of deploying AI systems at scale on GKE with proper monitoring, security, and cost optimization
The most fascinating learning was how multi-agent systems can solve problems that single AI models cannot - each agent specializes in a domain (product discovery, CO2 calculation, cart management) while the host agent orchestrates the entire workflow.
I also learned that environmental consciousness and technology can coexist, creating solutions that benefit both users and the planet. The project proved that AI can be a powerful force for environmental good when properly architected and deployed.
As a solo developer, I gained valuable experience in full-stack AI development, from low-level protocol implementation to production deployment and monitoring.
