Inspiration

Since everyone is facing some troubles in these confusing times because of the lockdown, and the theme can be combined with the current situation, I decided to make a game about survival in such world that I hope can help people see the pandemic in a different, better way, than they might think it is.

What it does

In Co-Rogue you are a survivor making your way through the land where the virus is lurking. No matter how dangerous it is, you keep on moving, looking for a better place. You start out healthy, but each time you move you risk of getting infected, so your health points drop down. You also want to avoid the virus cells, because even if they cannot kill you instantly since you are wearing a mask, they will damage your health. Think about your moves, even if the virus is slower than you, you are outnumbered. Along the way you will find medkits and vaccine prototypes, which cannot make you immune, but do make you healthier. Your goal is to reach the exit every day and survive as long as you can.

How I built it

The game was built in 2 days using the Unity engine, C#, and Gimp for pixel art.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges was the time limitation, but it was also the reason i had fun making the game. Tho the most trouble was caused in the code. I am not experienced in game making or in programming, so i still rely on tutorials. I didn't understand the code I was writing for quite some time, which was a problem later on when i had to do things that weren't covered in the tutorial. Note to self and other beginners - Always take time to look at the code you wrote down and study it. If you still do not understand it, ask Google or a friend who knows more than you!

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud that i managed to submit a game to a game jam, since it is my first game jam to participate in and put a lot of effort into. I also made a new friend, who helped me out when i needed help the most, so thank you Zealith!

What I learned

I have learned a lot, especially new C# keywords, methods and such. After writing the code I didn't quite understand, I decided to spend a couple of hours just studying about that code, what do things do and how they interact with each other. I have also learned that i need to prioritize tasks even better under time restrictions.

What's next for Co-Rogue

Since I barely managed to submit the game before time ran out, there is still a lot of things to be added and fixed in the game, like music and sfx or improving the code. Tho i don't think I'll come back to the game any time soon, I want to get back to it after i think I have advanced quite a bit.
