Inspiration

We personally struggle a lot with studying. It's often difficult for us to find the motivation to put in self-study time and it is far too easy and detrimental to look up the answers. We wanted something we can interact with as students that will help tutor us anytime we need it.

How it fits the hackathon topics

We used the MIT Github license and Gemma. The Gemma model e2b is a relatively new model coming out in April of this year. It is a highly lightweight AI model that made it perfect for the accessibility mission of this project.

What it does

Clutch functions as a lesson planner, a digital tutor, and a gamified study application. It can keep track of notes, lectures, and other materials to help reference and cater review sessions and quizzes to each individual user.

How we built it

We utilized a combination of Claude, Gemma, Ollama, Flask, OpenStax, and React as well as a variety of Python libraries. We put a major emphasis on scalability so that this system can easily be upgraded to include more features and as such, it is an open-source project.

Challenges we ran into

We found a variety of issues with the limitations of Gemma and verification. Some examples include mathematical verification issues we detected with the SymPy math library not appropriately determining limits and Gemma guessing incorrect answers or providing useless tips and advice. We overcame most of these by implementing additional reference materials through OpenStax to give Gemma some information it can reference while offline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We utilized Gemma primarily to have a lightweight, offline AI assistant. This accomplishment was designed to allow as many students to use this application as possible without requiring high-end specs or an internet connection.

What we learned

We learned a majority of our stack during this hackathon. We had only known how to use React, every other technology was completely new to us. We also learned a decent bit about the field of pedagogy itself and what makes an effective teaching method.

What's next for Clutch

We hope to expand Clutch to be compatible with mobile devices so that this tutor now goes with you wherever you go.
