Inspiration
College is a time to try new things and explore unexpected possibilities, yet amid the COVID-19 pandemic students are confined to their homes. At a time when we need community the most, it's difficult to connect with fellow students. Enter ClubHub: a reminder that we are not alone, that life is happening outside our doors, and that we can still be a part of it. We were inspired by the PNC challenge and the Student Life track.
What it does
Our website ClubHub is a one-stop-shop for University clubs. Though University of Pittsburgh has a website which maintains a list of clubs, this website goes a step further: it invites you to connect, to be spontaneous and try new things (like you did before the pandemic), and to reach out to those around you. ClubHub allows you to access club descriptions and schedules, "favorite" your regular clubs, see what's happening now, and view Pitt-sponsored events in addition to your regular university clubs. To incentivize users to try something new, ClubHub links event/club opportunities to University of Pittsbugh OCC credit, meaning you can get credit towards a graduation certificate just by attending. Additionally, ClubHub allows administrators to update club descriptions, policies, and Zoom links with ease, so users know they are always getting the most up to date information.
How we built it
We built our website with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We also utilized Figma to create mock-up designs for the theme of the website and Glitch to collaborate amongst teammates easier.
Challenges we ran into
Most of the challenges that we encountered were due to a lack of experience, as no one on the team had prior web development or UI/UX experience beyond the basics before this hackathon. As such, we spent a majority of our time teaching ourselves the formatting and syntax of the languages and fixing errors on the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the user interface of the website, especially given the roughly 36-hour timeframe. Designing in Figma -- as well as the complex transfer of those mock-ups to HTML -- was an intensive process but we're happy with the aesthetics of the site and believe that users will find it both exciting and inviting.
What we learned
With only one programmer in our group having ANY web development experience at all, we have been forced to learn nearly the entire process of coding our website in JS, HTML, and CSS over the course of this weekend. Our designer learned to use Figma from scratch as well, so overall it was a very educational (if perhaps overly-ambitious) weekend.
What's next for ClubHub
The next step of ClubHub would be to integrate database systems so that the site is more dynamic and utilizable, which we would have liked to do this weekend if we had had more time. We believe that this tool would be useful for colleges across the country, and hope to continue development on the project so that if can reach its full potential.
