Inspiration
We built this app as an answer to the scattered and sometimes overwhelming nature of campus communication. We wanted to create a centralized platform that simplifies how students engage with their campus communities, making it easier to stay informed and get involved.
What it does
ClubConnect streamlines campus life by aggregating announcements, events, and club meetings all in one place. It offers personalized feeds based on users’ club involvement, ensuring that every student stays informed and can maximize their engagement in their campus communities.
How we built it
Our team developed ClubConnect as a native Swift app to ensure optimal performance on iOS devices. We utilized Firebase Firestore for robust backend management and real-time data updates. For efficient data caching and quicker load times, we implemented Apple’s SwiftData. Additionally, we incorporated Core Image for scanning QR codes at events, facilitating a streamlined attendance process. Early in the development phase, we conducted interviews with various campus clubs to gather their specific requirements and expectations. This feedback was crucial in tailoring the app to meet the needs of its primary users. We have incorporated all their requirements into the current version, which is now ready for club officers to begin testing. This collaborative approach ensured that the app was practical, user-centric, and equipped to handle real-world campus engagement scenarios.
Challenges we ran into
One of the significant challenges we faced was managing the contributions of multiple team members in a seamless way using Git. Coordinating merges and resolving conflicts without disrupting ongoing development required meticulous attention to detail and robust version control practices. Additionally, we encountered difficulties ensuring that all the different components of the app, which were worked on by various team members, functioned cohesively. Ensuring compatibility and seamless integration of these disparate parts was crucial to delivering a stable and effective application. These challenges were instrumental in teaching us advanced collaborative techniques and integration testing strategies.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of having completed all the major features requested by our client, the Society of Black Engineers, within the agreed timeframe. Our commitment to user research paid off as we conducted extensive interviews with multiple clubs, gathering and implementing their feedback to shape the app’s functionality. This collaborative process not only enriched the feature set but also ensured that the app was user-centric and practical for real campus needs. Completing this comprehensive development cycle in just four months, with ongoing user involvement and feedback integration, is an achievement that underscores our team’s dedication and efficiency.
What we learned
Throughout the development of ClubConnect, we learned the importance of continuous user engagement in creating a product that truly serves its audience. We gained valuable insights into managing large-scale software projects, especially the intricacies of integrating diverse technological components and coordinating team efforts. Working closely with clubs helped us understand the specific needs of campus organizations, teaching us how to prioritize features and navigate the complexities of user-driven design.
What's next for ClubConnect
As we move forward, we plan to expand ClubConnect's functionality by introducing AI-driven recommendations to help users discover events and clubs aligned with their interests. We also aim to develop additional tools for event management and member engagement, further enhancing the app's utility. Long-term, we envision extending ClubConnect to other clubs and potentially adapting it for other community-based organizations, broadening our impact and fostering community involvement across various platforms.
