Inspiration

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many students had to adopt a digital virtual experience. Unlike an in-person scenario, students are not able to as easily collaborate with other students regarding their notes and comments about articles, texts, and readings. Because of this, there was a loss of opportunity for students to really be able to become educated about others' perspectives; additionally, students were no longer able to gain a deep understanding of the target content that often comes with discussion and group analysis. In this vacuum, CloudNotate would ideally step in.

What it does

The current iteration of CloudNotate highlights text on any webpage.

How we built it

The CloudNotate chrome extension essentially identifies whatever text is highlighted by the cursor presently. Then, it looks through all the text on the page and identifies all the occurrences of that highlighted text. Finally, it inserts the and tag around the occurrences of the specific text so that it appears highlighted on the page.

Challenges we ran into

JavaScript was a language that none of us had much experience in. Thus, it was hard to get a technical grasp on it in order to create the extension.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The CloudNotate extension can highlight text on any website.

What we learned

We learned that it is better to prepare for hackathons by getting exposure to the language we will likely be programming in beforehand.

What's next for CloudNotate

Future iterations of CloudNotate could include an option to create comments on specific portions of text on a page. Furthermore, CloudNotate could include the option to share the comments (and highlights) with a specified group. Another functionality would be to have CloudNotate automatically generate a quiz based on the information contained in a page to test for comprehension.
