Inspiration
I had begun building a smart cooker a few months ago but never completed it. When my friend forwarded me a tweet from Jason requesting a robotic grilled cheese cooker I was inspired to finish cloudCuisine and submit it to the hackathon.
What it does
It is a cooker with two pans (similar to a waffle cooker) that rotates. I added a servo and some printed gears as well as a raspberry pi to control the pan heat and turning function. Based on recipes in the app, cloud cuisine will turn the pan heat on, flip the pan and turn off the heat.. cooking the recipe perfectly every time.
How I built it
I started with a waring pro omelette maker, a raspberry pi and a large servo. After dissecting the Waring Pro and 3D printing some gears and supports I built cloud cuisine. It uses an IOS app as well as a web app to send your recipes to the cooker.
Challenges I ran into
The biggest issue I had was using printed parts with a hot pan. Wood ended up being the solution for the prototype but the production version would get a completely redesigned pan and housing.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Originally this project was built as a web based app because I had never built a mobile app before. Now the prototype works with an IOS app and even the apple watch!
What I learned
As mentioned before.. I learned how to develop for iPhone and apple watch.
What's next for CloudCuisine
The next step and biggest hurtle is to get a custom prototype pan built that doesn't use a Waring Pro. Also, the application will need to be built more fully with user accounts etc.
